I had a really great weekend.
Last week I was pretty lonely and full of self-loathing. By Friday I was afraid what the weekend was going to be like, since I wouldn't have work to occupy me.
After eating a burrito for dinner, I got stoned and listened to music (mostly hip hop) and danced around for a good long while (the more stoned I am, the likelihood of me doing the robot increases exponentially), intermittently rushing to my notebook and writing down all the seemingly completely genius thoughts I was having (though I forgot about half of them before I could write them down). Then I called Toren and talked to him on the phone for a good hour (I laughed a lot and had what I thought were many brilliant ideas), watched a couple episodes of Bones afterwards, and then slept for about twelve hours.
(It occurred to me on Friday that "being stoned" stories are about as interesting as "the dream I had last night" stories - that is, fascinating only to the person telling the story, because it's an exploration of their own thought processes, seen from a different angle.)
Saturday I lazed around the house for a good chunk of the day and then decided it was too beautiful outside for me to wallow in my lazy pot hangover, so I walked down to Soma and drank a big cup of chai. They were playing some really good turntablist hip hop (no vocals), which I found out was Mr Dibbs. (I downloaded Turntable Scientifics and The 30th Song yesterday.) Then I continued my walk and ended up walking all the way downtown. I picked up volumes 1 and 2 of Yostuba& (I read Vol. 1 last night, and it is Very Funny).
In the evening I met up with Patrick (my old high school boyfriend who I still hang out with once in a while in a totally non-romantic capacity) for dinner, and then we went to Richard's on Richards and saw P:ano play with The Books. I've heard much about The Books and downloaded and half-heartedly listened to a couple of their songs before going to the show, but I wasn't very familiar with them. I was pretty blown away by how good they were. There were accompanying videos (which kind of defy adequate description) to go along with their songs. I liked them because their music and videos embodied something that seemed genuine, optimistic, creative, and unpretentious. That the world is a mysterious and fascinating place.
After the show we had dollar pizza and then headed to a party at Patrick's friend's house, who was also a guy I went to high school with. And it was only three blocks away from my house. The party had already wound quite down, but we played a bit of Guitar Revolution and sat chatting on the kitchen floor with some people and then did karaoke (yay!). I got home about 3:30.
And then yesterday I was woken by a phone call from my parents and we went for lunch to Calhoun's and enjoyed the sunshine and did a bit of window shopping afterwards. When I got home I went for a bike ride, meandering around the bike routes west of Granville and listening my mp3 player.
I caught the new Doctor Who on Saturday.
The problem with a tv show about time travel is that depictions of the past are bound to be anachronistic. I've found it quite hard to suspend my disbelief, especially in the Victorian-era episodes (Dickens and then Queen Victoria herself). I know they have a limited budget and time-frame, but I think they could try to be more historically accurate - speech mannerisms, behaviour, costumes, and the like. But then, if the premise of the episode is going back in time and fighting werewolves with Queen Victoria who then decides to form an organization that is the enemy of the Doctor, I don't know how much you can do to make that believable. Anyway, the future and extra-terrestrial ones work better than Earth In The Past.
I think I just have a problem in general with self-proclaimed sci-fi that isn't hard enough. Star Wars isn't really sci-fi, it's a space opera. But Star Trek, for instance, tries to call itself sci-fi when a lot of the premises of the episodes (and the science in them) are laughable in their stupidity.
Anyway, I'm stoked because the next episode appears to have an evil-looking Anthony Stewart Head in it.
