Pennsic, NYRF and other things
All summer to date, grinning_fox and Potted Fox and I have been gearing up for NYRF, the largest faire either of us have vended at. It's going well enough but it's certainly had it's problems. The booth is at the very back of the faire, as far as possible from the front gate, in the children's area. The booth does not do well in children's area. The weather has not cooperated - it's rained at least one day of each weekend. We got all the cars stuck in the mud and a bunch of guys to push them out, slinging mud across the entire campsite.
In between first weekend and second weekend, we went to Pennsic. Chris was supposed to come with us. Actually, he was the impetus for planning the trip. K and I had written off going once we found out PF was accepted to NYRF. "We'll go next year," we decided. "It's too far to go for such a short time after being burned out from first weekend of faire," we said. Then Chris said it was his 40th birthday in the middle of War Week. So a quick pow wow with the Clan and he was approved to camp with us. We pre-reg'ed. We planned. And then Chris' shop got moved to the front of the faire, he nearly sold out of stock and he got too nervous to leave camp, preferring to stay behind and make stuff while sending the womenfolk out into the Wilds of Pennsylvania (which we did drive through this year).
We had a good war, saw friends, ticked off things on the List of Stuff I Need to Find and Buy and See that we started last year, saw friends, sat around a camp fire, took pictures, watched a battle, walked the bog, and relaxed. K and I figure we walked at least 50 miles over 4 1/2 days. Well, 1 1/2-2 miles per hour times 4 days times 6-8 hours per day. Ironed out my employment at CTRF for Tatterdemalion.

This past week and weekend has been recovering from all the driving - 11 hours to get to NYRF due to 3 hours of traffic; 8 hours for the 6 hour drive to Pennsic; 8 hours for the drive back due to I-80 being a parking lot; 10 hours getting home from NYRF. I spent the entire weekend laying on the beach, working on my tan and napping.
I'm debating when I'll return to NYRF. Weekends 6, 7 & 8 are out. Weekend 5 - which is Labor Day weekend, is a definite. Weekend 4 - this coming weekend is in question. I can't leave work early so I leave here at 3:30 for an 8 hour drive, if I'm lucky and don't hit traffic. I may or may not make it to site on Friday, which means finding a hotel for the night, or a safe place to put the car. I'd be there all day Saturday. I don't know if I have my tent to myself Saturday night, then I have to get up, get some things started and leave 1/2 way through the day to start the long drive back. We'll see. I'll decide on Thursday after checking the weather. Beach weather and I'll stay at the 'rents. Rainy, and I'll head to NY.
