If it wasn't known, I'm quite into Indian (and, well, Eastern) culture, which is why I went to a Canton Hindu temple for a Sunday "service" today. Close friends of my mother, Renuka and Mukesh, are members of the temple. I went with two women I didn't know, but my mom is friends with: 51-year-old Carla and her 70-year-old friend of 35 years from Missouri, Carolynn. At first I was sort of apprehensive, considering these two women were over-hyper and annoying. However, I warmed up to them and today ended up being so amazing.
We attended a 2 and a half hour service, all recited in Hindi, of course, with skits and dances. Women and men are separated for services, but today was a women's day, so we got the large hall and the alter. After the service, all the women joined on the floor to eat a meal. Everyone was so extremely friendly, and so excited to have us.
Afterwards we went to Renuka's home and talked over chai. This is where I got a true sense of Carla and Carolynn. Carla is a very spiritual person, Carolynn is so curious about this new culture, and Renuka is, unsurprisingly, still great. I wish Mukesh would have been there (he was still busy at the temple). He is the type of person I would want to marry.
Oh, and last night I went to the Indian dance ceremony (yes, the one that I foolishly dropped out of). It's been such an Indian weekend.
