Little Women (1933)

Yesterday, I’ve watched George Cukor’s Little Women (1933) with Katharine Hepburn in the leading role of Jo March. (Found that video cassette among many others - and thought it was high time to watch it!)

Little Women is a good old family movie, filled with sound patriotism, and accompanied by peaceful music of Max Steiner. Young!Katharine Hepburn is charming as the tomboy Jo (and I think close to my mental image of her). How she slides down the stairs banister and skips over hedges! - but I liked her open smile best. Other sisters are played by less famous actresses, and each is nice in her way, though Joan Bennett may seem too adult for the part of Amy.

Personally, I never liked that stereotype of a male hero which was common in the 1930s. Young Douglass Montgomery (Laurie) seemed too lady-like and sweet. As for Paul Lukas (Professor Bhaer), he was terribly nice, but I can’t forgive him his heavy accent when he spoke German. :) (Yes, I’m a bore like that.)

It is a good, pleasant thing, which can bring a warm smile to your lips - only what happens in it seems so far off and away from today’s real life… it evokes nostalgic feelings in me. I also hope TV folks will show us this or another version of Little Women for Christmas.
