The Gayest Show on Earth

Forget the Superbowl - I could care less about that. The big night that I look forward to all year long is the Antoinette Perry Awards (That’s the Tony’s, in case you aren’t a theater buff…or gay) I make it a habit to count the queers and this time I came up with a tally of eight, starting with the host, Sean Hayes. Out musician/actor Levi Kreis (in the picture with Sean Hayes) won for his performance as Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet. There were appearances by Ricky Martin, Nathan Lane, and David Hyde Pierce - check, check, check - then the producer of the winner for best drama, Red, thanked his partner of 20 years - another checkmark on my tally card.

During the final performance by the cast from American Idiot, some of the lyrics were censored out - that’s American television for you.

And when Catherine Zeta Jones performed “Send in the Clowns” I was appalled. Her jerky head movements were freaky. It looked like she was trying too hard to be a Broadway musical star. At the end of the night when she actually WON for best actress, she was completely shocked, as was I.
