Willful, sarcastic, and stubborn to a point where it can become childish, Clary, at heart, really is just a sixteen-year-old girl.
Despite the extraordinary situations of her life and her Shadowhunter heritage, she was raised in modern-day New York City and enjoys anime, movies, drawing, and “couch time,” as she says, with her best friend. That said, she is also quite good at adapting despite her claim that she dislikes change, and does a remarkable job of not only taking in stride the various revelations about her past and family, but also willfully overcoming the challenges presented to her. She sometimes thinks of herself as weak and gets down on herself for being ‘useless’, especially since she is not very strong physically or trained in battle like other Shadowhunters, but she is actually quite good at thinking on her feet and quick to learn new things.
Clary’s emotions often get the better of her, at times to a point where she can be rather unreasonable, but, overall, she means well. Her family (in this case, her mother and Luke) and friends mean everything to her, proven by the fact that she strives throughout the books to save her mother, to protect her friends, and to use what means and strength she has to help them. She is passionate and rash-although she does try to control herself because she is aware of that fact, and it’s been pointed out to her that leaping into things without looking can be dangerous for both her and those she cares about. Still, her penchant for acting first and thinking later, especially when she gets emotional, is an essential part of who she is.
It is also noteworthy that, although Clary certainly has a strong sense of justice-even if that justice tends to be based on very youthful, simplistic good-and-evil logic-she is not above anger and even hatred, especially toward those who threaten her loved ones. At the same time, however, she is far from the type of person to try to see the bad in others; Clary tends to be encouraging and trusting, not to a naïve extent but certainly not disillusioned. She is brave, determined, and loves fiercely-qualities that often get her in trouble, but are completely sincere. Clary is true to herself, even when it hurts, and though that is a quality that can make her impossibly rash, stubborn, and critical of herself, it also gives her strength.
In addition, the feelings she develops for Jace throughout the series are another important aspect of Clary. After her mother is taken in the beginning of the first book and she first starts to get to know Jace, her relationship with him affects her and her choices significantly. In short, Clary is in love with Jace-and, as if love isn’t complicated enough, things become even more frustrating for her. Among her trials in the series, the emotional struggle to make sense of how she feels for Jace is key in Clary’s development as a character, so much so that several other characters even comment on how clear her love for him is just by the way she looks around him. She loves him very much, but even Jace is not beyond fault; Clary is perfectly capable of being angry with him and being able to see when he is acting in a self-destructive way or making a decision she doesn’t agree with. To find out, after having already fallen in love with him, that he is actually her brother is a great blow to them both, and Clary struggles greatly with her feelings, unable to overcome her emotions but at the same time understandably disturbed by her apparently incestual desire for him. Still, Clary is resolved to be with him in whatever way she can, heartbroken though she is after Jace makes an announcement that he wants to be ‘just her brother’ from then on because he thinks that is what she wants. She can’t bear to be away from him, and though she isn’t happy with simple friendship or being siblings, the times she’s tried to be apart from him in the series (as punishment to herself, for example) simply don’t work out; they keep drawing one another together again. Jace is her greatest weakness- and a source of great strength for her, a reason for her to keep fighting. Although all of her family and friends are very important to Clary, Jace in particular has a special place in her heart.
[Specialties/Abilities] As a Nephilim, even though she did not receive the training other Nephilim did when she was younger, her body is still a bit stronger and more resilient than a regular human’s. She has the ability to make Marks like any Shadowhunter-and then also has the ability, unique to her alone, to create Marks. The full scope of her ability is not revealed in the series, nor has she truly mastered it yet, but she has been shown capable of making new Runes and putting them to use in a variety of ways that other characters even comment should be impossible. She can create Portals, bring drawings to life, and even amplify the strength of Runes-though the latter may be limited only to those Runes that she comes up with herself (the canon example being that she imagines a Rune for open, and is then able to make its power much stronger later in the book).
[Other important stuff that might have been covered by history but might also be worth mentioning again]
As one can probably see from her name(s)-Clarissa Fray/Fairchild/Morgenstern-Clary’s family is complicated, to say the least. She was raised by her single mother, who tried to hide her Shadowhunter heritage from Clary, as well as the world beyond that which Mundanes see. This is the reason that, though a Shadowhunter by blood, Clary’s personality and cultural upbringing are greatly affected by a modern-day urban atmosphere. Also, although she emotionally considers Luke, her mother’s close friend, to be her real father-figure, Clary’s blood-related father is actually the main antagonist of the series, Valentine Morgenstern-whom she hates. To make matters even more complicated, her love interest, Jace, is also thought to be Valentine’s son and thus her brother for most of the series. This makes things very hard for Clary, who has fallen in love with him by the time she discovers their alleged relation, and she has a very difficult time trying to convince herself that they cannot be together despite how strongly she feels for him.
[Affection]
Hugging - Go ahead!
Kissing - You could try... but she'll reject you.
More - No. Not unless you want Jace to murder you.
[Fighting]
She isn't much of a fighter, but I'd be cool with trying out fighting plots and whatnot. I'm also okay with injuring her, possibly severely depending on the plot, so just come and talk to me if you're unsure on anything.
[Other Permissions]
Telepathy - probably yes, though asking on a case by case basis is preferred
Fourth-walling - No, please.
[Other Facts] She uuuh. Likes to draw! :D
