[As if it wasn't bad enough that she'd been spending the day before doing one of her least favorite chores from back - dressing and tanning game - Luceti had decided to play a little trick on Katara and turn her wings blood red. And then the sun didn't rise - or when it did... solar eclipses weren't supposed to last this long. They'd planned ( Read more... )

[Hmm... She wonders if Katara is keeping up. She's going slowly, but still... maybe this is too much to take in? Heart shakes her head to herself and continues-]

This way made the week until the party pass very quickly... and in no time at all, Kawika was getting dressed to go to the celebration. His sister helped him with the finishes touches for his costume and when they had finished, his mother praised him. She said that he looked like a real little king. Kawika had never felt more proud in his young life than that moment.

When he arrived at the party, the first thing Kawika did was of course find his friends. It turns out they all had really impressive costumes too! His friend Lahani was dressed as a gorgeous hula dancer. His friend Kona came as a surfer, and even he even has his own surfboard to go with it. Suki was wearing an authentic-looking palm tree costume... but most surprising of all was his friend Melina. She was dressed as one of the same pineapples he had been eating with his family all week. He laughed when he saw that costume and tried not to get too close, secretly afraid he might get poked by the spines.

[Hmm... she taps a finger on the journal before she continues, her tone growing little sharper - they are nearing the climax, after all] But after Kawika finished her laugh about Melina's costume, he was the butt of the joke! Kona bowed to him and said "Oh, if it isn’t King Kamehameha. Your Highness" in a teasing voice. [A teasing voice that Heart tries - vainly - to replicate. Mode one isn't great at that sort of thing] All the other children laughed and also bowed to him, echoing Kona's "Your Highness," even Suki who was pretending to be a tree. For the rest of the night Kawika heard people whispering about his costume as he passed, and he felt sad and foolish then, because he was sure people were making fun of him.

Soon came the judging. By now, Kawika was discouraged, but he went up to listen to the results like all the other girls and boys. Though they had been watching all night, all of the three judges walked up to each child in turn and took some notes about this costume one last time to make sure they made the best choice!

For the most original, Melina with her pineapple costume that Kawika had laughed at won. Kawika and everyone else clapped of her, and even he needed to admit that she deserved it. For the most colorful costume, they picked Lahani, who used her costume well as she hula danced up onto the stage. Again, everyone clapped, and Kawika felt himself getting really tense... he had thought he might win that one!

But then the final judge stepped forward and said... "For the best costume all around he picked the one which looks like the most effort went into it. The costume of King Kamehameha! Kawika, would you please come up to the stage?" [And for that bit, Heart does her best to put on an old man voice, for authenticity's sake.]

Kawika was delighted, and jumped out of his seat to quickly go to the stage. His friends Suki and Kona followed him up, carrying his robe behind him like he was the real king. When he got there, he took the trophy in hand and found that in the middle of it was one of the biggest pineapples he had ever seen. He to his picture taken with the prize, and when he walked off the stage his friends - including Kona - all apologized to him for making fun of the costume. The party ended a little after that, so with his trophy and the pineapple in hand, he raced home to show his mother and Kamalani his prize.

That night the family all ate the giant pineapple for dinner. To Kawika, it was one of the most filling meals he had ever had, so he went to bed right after. He still had his trophy in hand by the time he was sleeping... his mother, smiling a little to herself, took the trophy out of his hand and set it on the shelf in his room when he came to turn out the light.

[Heart takes a breath again and the next sentence has an air of light finality - clearly the end of the story]

And when she left she took one look back to wish sweet dreams to her proud little king, asleep in his bed.

[She barely paused to take a breath.]

That's a nice story, Heart. Thank you.

[Katara... got the gist of it.]

You're welcome. I hope I didn't confuse you or anything.

[Because - slightly too late - she realizes that this is alien to Katara world-wise]
