[his answer is immediate-- alerted out of a half-sleep by the tone of her voice when she says his name, before the words themselves]

[Sokka is the one that ends up answering for Katara's sake, who is close at hand. He tries to keep a firm voice, but in spite of that he can't contain how worried he is.]

[She hears him when he comes in and is just - so relieved. One hand drops from her eyes and she turns towards him and tries to smile.]

[Ginko doesn't answer until he's placed his box on the floor and walked over to Katara. The darkened room doesn't look any different than if it were lit, to his eye.

He glances from Toph to Sokka with an imperturbable calm]

[gently, he places a hand on her head, his voice a little quieter]

[She relaxes a little at his touch and turns her head towards his voice. Just dropping her other hand is hard, but she does it. And - just to clarify - she says in a voice much smaller than she'd like:] You want me to open my eyes?

[Sokka cringes at Ginko's explanation. So he had just managed to make it worse making the room dark.] Heated water, got it.

[It breeds in darkness. By trying to avoid the pain... she'd just been helping them make it worse. Well. She's not going to stand for that.]

All right.

[She squares her shoulders, exhales, and opens her eyes. It burns, but she manages to hold Ginko's gaze for a few seconds before shutting them again and shaking her head, almost instinctively. She tastes blood from where she bit down on the inside of her cheek to keep from making a sound.]

Do I need to do it longer?
