[Raine was right. A draft had come, this one worse than before - and in a place where she could be more useful than any other location. And she wasn't going.

She took a good long look at that list. And there are some people that she has to visit.

...okay, there are a lot of people she has to visit ( Read more... )

[Whats all this then?] Katara, I know this may not be the best time...by the sounds of it, but...whats all this then?

'This...' [How does she even begin to explain? Well, they don't let her intro the show for nothing.] The Malnosso are at war with a group of people who want to permanently kill everyone on the planet in order for them to 'find their release' from the endless cycles here. But the Malnosso organization itself is split into fractions. The fraction that has been in charge has recently fallen out of power, and now the military itself seems to be in charge of the missions that they draft people to go on for them. They take anyone; it doesn't matter if you can fight or not. And the only choice you have once you're out there is to kill the Third Party or be killed yourself.

So, we are being used as soldiers for another man's war? That sounds like absolute barbarism. Is the draft random then? Or could someone take another's place?

[He understands this is hard, but he is new, and he is a general. War is part of his craft, and he feels like he needs to know]

According to the Malnosso, they take anyone who is compatible with the Shift necessary to bring us out there. There are no substitutions.

[sounds like they aren't telling the whole truth then]
Thats horrid. So there isn't anything we can do?

If there is, we haven't found it yet. The best we can do is be prepared when we're called out to go, and do what we can to prepare those who aren't fighters.

Tell me Katara, is there *any* sort of school for warriors or militia here?

The Blue Rogues are about the closest thing you could find to a militia. Adell leads them. And Buffy started a school for those who wanted further training a few months back.

Well, that is something. If these drafts come up, why doesn't everyone learn even just a little bit about fighting? It saves lives...

There are some people here who've never known war, and some people who refuse to kill for any reason. They just... don't have the experience.

[It's amazing, and jealousy-inducing for her.] Even if they're interested, no one can make them go to combat school. If they're not certain that they can hold off someone long enough to get away, then it's better that they stay protected instead of endangering themselves out on the field.

[He would normally agree, but...given the forced nature of the war...] And yet they are forced into war. I do not know the circumstances, so I cannot presume to say more than this. Better to learn to protect yourself so that you do not endanger others.
