Hey, can I ask you guys a favor?
[Private to Derek]
Hey, Derek. Sokka said Donnie was passing on a message from you - that you were ready to give it a try? So when would you like to do this?
[Filtered 100 percent away from Sokka]Hey, everyone. I know it's incredibly lousy timing, but it's Sokka's

...I think he misunderstood me. I told him to go look for you and help take a look at the stuff. Figured that brain of his might be able to analyze it a bit more with you before I agreed to it.
[And if it still looked iffy, to try and talk you out of it, Katara.]
At any rate, should probably wait until after the draft.
[In case you need it there.]

Although I'm not really sure you can analyze something from the Spirit Oasis. But I don't see why it should have to wait. They give you whatever you want out there, you just can't bring it back.
[So she can get a refill if it's needed on the field.]

Breathe. Okay.]
Just...wait. You have more important things to worry about right now, and I'm not going anywhere. It can wait.

...we both know that there are wounds that, even if I had all the spirit water in the world, I wouldn't be able to heal. [Headshots, for example. You died out there, after all. Katara can't rule out the possibility... It takes an effort to keep her voice steady and free of fear, but she manages it. Instead it's slow, like she's feeling her way with her words.]If I end up coming back without my bending, then it won't matter if I still have the Spirit Water. There won't be anything I can do. And I don't know anyone else who heals here like I can. I don't want to lose the chance to help you. There are two days before the draft, and if you call me any time before then, I'll come. Because I think ( ... )

...Not like me. That's already been proven by the mess they made bringing me back from the last draft.
Your soul will still be whole; you'd just have to wait to fix the rest of it. They can't fix mine, though. It's beyond their reach. And I can wait. I have to anyway, for everyone's sake.

And the important part is that he's holed up in a cave, away from everyone, too scared of himself to be with anyone, and with this horrible thing gnawing at him. She could help beat it back, she just knows she can - why won't he let her?]
So how long do you plan on waiting, Derek? When do you get to decide when's a good time to let me try it? Why should you have to stay out there any longer than you have to? If it doesn't work, it won't work, and you can keep waiting. Isn't it better to know?

[He takes a minute, gathering his words before speaking. When he does finally start, his voice is measured and calm and almost detached.]
That is your only vial, right? The only one that you have here, in the enclosure. And we don't know that it'll work...or even if it might backfire.
...and even if it does work, someday, I'll go home. To the very moment that I left. And, probably, in the same condition that I was when I got here.

[She does not LIKE this detachment. This is your life, and the lives of everyone around you! You should be fighting for it! What are you so afraid of?]
And if all you're worried about is that it would get used up if it didn't work - don't. There are more and better healers here then I've seen anywhere else. Nala can heal broken bones in minutes! [Like... hers. Just the other day.]
[...and this more quietly.] Besides. It's my water. Not yours. You can decide whether or not you want me to help you, but when you do leave out worrying about 'wasting it.' Because, for me? Even if it doesn't work, knowing that I used it to try to help a friend is worth it.
[She would have used it on a scar, Derek. How much more your condition?]

And not at the possible expense of someone else.]
I hear you. And I'm still going to ask you to wait. Just wait.
