We are doomed and don't ask, don't tell.

At the beginning of each class my PolySci professor asks the question, "What was my last lecture about?" Well, his last lecture consisted of a speech about how Democracies will ultimately fail because people will elect the candidates who promise everything. Ultimately then, after the country is bankrupt a dictator will emerge. At this point he played a half-hour video Hitler: Anatomy of a Dictator.

I really don't know about my professor - kind of scary.

Then we broke into small groups to discuss our homework. Most of the kids in my group had answered the questions incorrectly although the answers could be found in the textbook. I now understand why Georgia is 49th in SAT scores. Thank God, I was educated as a Yankee. The girl who elected herself as our group leader and incorrectly defined "democracy", started talking politics. Please note the irony here. "My daddy says everyone in the house votes for Bush or your not living under my roof", she declared. So I replied, "It's my way or the highway at your house." I wanted to remind her that voting was by secret ballot, but it was obvious she could not keep a secret two seconds, no physical torture required.

I remember growing up I would ask my parents how they voted. Their reply was always "it's a secret - privacy should be maintained, that's part of what voting is all about." To this day, I still do not ask or tell my parents about voting.
