I can recommend the Doctor Who Experience at Olympia 2. It comes out reasonably well against the Punchdrunk affair in Salford, although enhanced somewhat by our particular "guide" - i.e. the equivalent of a stage manager, replete with roadie outfit and walkie talkies - and I saw him at one point whilst we waited to go in due to "technical difficulties" wandering backstage with a ladder which he assured me was an essential plot device - being LITERALLY a Manga version of David Tennant. Who randomly started doing Pingu impressions at one point. And managed to explain to some very baffled young children that Daleks had plungers because they were based on the Nazis, and the plunger was included to make them seig-heiling look as ludicrous as possible. The man should take over from Matt Smith when he leaves frankly. We got lucky. I think everyone else was actually just some carrying on like roadies / security for their tours.
The sets and effects came out particularly well against the Punchdrunk Doctor Who - which is a clear compliment - with a few quite clever little tricks. No "live action" but a nice original storyline with original Matt Smith material via a series of video screens throughout the walkthrough. Less immersive theatre, more the high end "studio" attraction you might get from somewhere like Universal Studios theme parks. Very much designed for kids mind you. I`d like to tell you about some of the quite cool set pieces with the sets, but that would spoil it.
The exhibition that follows was more of a treat for older fans. Being a museum of who. In which I had the pleasure of helping Manga Tennant reset the central cylinder on the old classic who control room. (admittedly this mostly consisted of shouting "it`s down! No, sorry it`s gone back up. It`s down again!" whilst he was behind the scenes fiddling with an iplayer).
Well worth a go, although perhaps (in fact, definitely) not worth the £20 plus booking fee they want off you for it. Theres online discounts for pre booking I think. I lobbed them Tesco vouchers and felt fine with it.
