Aligning the Pieces [Ch.5 Dare]

Mar 03, 2008 19:10

Roxas grunted loudly as his friends followed in his wake, chuckling to themselves. He couldn’t believe he had let his guard down and chosen to take a dare, worse yet he couldn’t believe he was actually going through with it. As the group neared the overcrowded mansion, Roxas’ reflexes began to get the best of him.

“Don’t sweat it,” Riku smirked, putting extra emphasis on the word that explained Roxas’ current physical condition

Roxas glared, debating moving at a quicker pace just to get the task over with.

“You know professing your love to the mysterious boy in your math class isn’t that bad,” Sora started, “I mean, at least you’ll know how he feels about you”

“Yeah Sora, cause that’s really the way I like to make first impressions,” Roxas replied

“It will definitely be an interesting conversation,” Hayner smiled, laughing out loud

“Shh!” Olette countered, hitting Hayner on the arm, “We’re here”

Roxas groaned, taking in the sight before him. Almost the entirety of the high school was crowded on Axel’s front lawn and throughout his house. The raging music was already starting to give the anxious boy a headache, and to top it all off, Axel was nowhere to be found.

“Guess we’re gonna have to join in the fun,” Riku commented, taking Sora’s hand and leading the group into the larger mass of people

Roxas was slow to follow the crew and walked with his eyes on his shoes, terrified of spotting the person he had to confront. As the crew slowed to a halt Roxas peered up at Riku, hating the silver haired boy with a fiery passion at the moment.

“All you have to do is go up to Axel and say ‘Hi, my name is Roxas and I am ridiculously in love with you’,” Riku told Roxas, giving him a pat on the back, “and remember… I’ll be watching”

Roxas rolled his eyes, following Riku’s outstretched finger to Axel’s lithe form across the room. Time stood still for a moment as Roxas’ cerulean eyes made their way up Axel’s body, from his shoes, to his belt, to his hand hanging lazily beside him, to his chest, and finally to meet his eyes. Roxas quickly darted away from his gaze, looking back at the floor meekly. Hayner gave him a shove, and Roxas peered behind him at his group of friends, waiting eagerly to see the show.

He sighed, knowing full well there was no escape. The small boy made his way through the mass of people between him and his newfound eye candy. Person by person he moved, snaking his way through the crowd like a silent ghost until finally he could smell the lighter fluid entering his nostrils. He stopped abruptly, not taking his eyes off of his shoes.

“H-Hi,” he stuttered, not even sure if the redhead could hear him, “M-my nameisroxasandimridiculouslyinlovewithyou”

He turned, ready to run away as fast as his legs would take him but was intercepted by a hand with an unusually tight grasp on his arm. The taller boy spun Roxas around almost as quickly as he had turned, eager to make sense of the jumble that had just escaped Roxas’ lips.

“You say something to me mail boy?”

Roxas wasn’t sure if that was meant to be an insult or a serious question. He cocked his head to see the familiar clan of faces still staring at him, and resentfully moved his gaze back to its original position.

“U-um… ye-yeah I-I did,” he stammered, still scared to bring his eyes above Axel’s shoulders

“Well I didn’t quite catch it, you mind saying it again?”

“It was really nothing. I mean you wouldn’t want to hear it. It’s really not important you know. I’m just going on about nothing… ehe”

If that wasn’t the most retarded sounding thing he had ever said, it should have been.

“Aw just tell me short stuff, it can’t be that bad,” Axel grinned, leaning back against the wall behind him

Roxas hated it when Axel stood like that. It was so… enticing. He swore he could watch the taller boy stand like that forever, just flicking open his lighter nonchalantly, like the world was spinning because he was breathing and nothing else mattered.

“I said… Hi, my name is Roxas and I’m ridiculously in love with you,” he murmured, under his breath

“You’re friends dare you to say that to me or something?” Axel asked, taking note of the hysterical laughter emitting from a group of kids a few feet away

“How’d you guess?” Roxas smiled, the first time in twenty-four hours

“Just a hunch,” he chuckled, pointing at Hayner and the other’s surrounding him

“Look I’m really sorry about this, I mean I know I look like a total douche bag right now and you probably don’t want anything to do with a loser like me so I’m just gonna go and hope to god my friends let me live this down and you don’t think I’m some weirdo, okay?”

Roxas didn’t give Axel a chance to answer before shuffling swiftly over to his friends in the corner.

“I can’t believe you did it Rox!” Riku praised, as they all headed for the door, some more frantically than others

“Yeah well a dare’s a dare, and that’s ALL it was okay,” Roxas replied

“C’mon Roxas, wasn’t it exciting?” Hayner joked

“You looked like you enjoyed it,” Pence continued

“What did he say?” Olette asked, Kairi’s bright eyes yearning for more information

“Yeah Rox, are you two in love?” Sora added, wrapping his arms tightly around his brother

The seven of them reached the usual spot in no time and Roxas new that he was going to be in for a long night, he was just happy that night wouldn’t be spent at Axel’s party. Unfortunately, he also knew that he would never live this down, despite his hopes.

And it was there in the usual spot that Roxas enlightened his friends with all the embarrassing details of his first real encounter with the boy of his dreams, and it was there that all six of his companions made it perfectly clear that he would be the laughingstock of the group for quite some time. He was really regretting passing up the truth opportunity and made a silent vow to never play that stupid game again.
