Architecture as a Creative Process

I was quite pleased and proud to see this article about Robert Bruno and his house at Ransom Canyon. He was one of my professors at Texas Tech University, and he had a big influence on my design esthetic. Of course, I haven't had the luxury of taking 30 years to design and build anything, or the opportunity to really let loose with such organic forms, at least in my professional life.

As noted in the article, Bruno is an artist, and I related to him because he wasn't limited to talking about architecture in a "traditional" sense. Architecture must also be art-if not, why bother? This also may have influenced my decision to change my major to art-a decision that only lasted one semester, because I realized architecture was really what I wanted to do.

When I was in Lubbock, Bruno had only completed the vertical supports and the lower portion of the structure of the first floor. But I knew this was going to be something significant. The last time I was there, I drove up to the canyon and saw that it was much further along, but still not finished.

I must admit, I have always wondered whether it would ever be finished-and I am so happy that he will soon be able to move in. The next time I'm in Lubbock, I'm going to stop by and see him.
