And Now I'm Going To Lie In It

Feb 11, 2006 12:17

Today, after fifteen months, something has officially changed.

Today, I made my bed.

Last month I moved into my first apartment since moving out my Seattle place - and launching this nomadic escapade - on Halloween of 2004. Then I retrieved my bed from my friend Carrie, who'd been keeping it for me all this time.

But it was only yesterday that I finally got down to IKEA, using my store credit to buy some new sheets and a pillow.

A few minutes ago, I took them warm and clean from the dryer, and stretched them out over my mattress. My own, official, made bed to sleep in.

It got me thinking about the places I've laid my head in the meantime:

The Places I've Slept in the Last Fifteen Months:
• The seats of an Amtrak train
• The lounge benches of an Amtrak train
• the cabin of my Dad's boat in Marco Island, Florida
• a cot in my Mom's back room in Oakland, California
• the back seat of my Volkswagen
• a cot in the International Hostel in New Orleans
• the bed of two different motel rooms in Orlando, Florida
• a bunk in two different Hostels in Chicago
• the guest bedroom in my friend Shannon's parents' house in Phoenix, Arizona
• a cot in the YMCA Hotel in Berkeley, California
• my friend Jim's fold-out couch in Walnut Creek, California
• the couch in Room 13 in my friends Paul and Debbie's basement - Seattle, Washington
• the couch in the garage of my friend Matt's house - Seattle, Washington
• the guest bedroom in my friends Joel and Rachel's brand new house - Shoreline, Washington
• the guest bedroom in my friends Joey and Aubrey's house, during which time I dogsat their dog Jet - Shoreline, Washington
• the couch and the basement floor of my friends Carrie and Rebecca's old house - Seattle, Washington
• the guest bedroom in my friends Carrie and Rebecca's new house - Seattle, Washington
• on the floor in the empty apartment that my friend Kristen's brother and his new wife had just moved out of - Shoreline, Washington
• the floor of my friend Kyle's studio apartment - Seattle, Washington
• the guest bedroom of my friend Kyle's mom's farmhouse - Mt. Vernon, Washington
• the loft of my student Aaron's family's house for Thanksgiving - Bothell, Washington
• the guest bedroom of my friend Jehan's parents' house while Jeff and she housesat - Kenmore, Washington
• my sleeping bag on the floor of a room in the Salt Lake City Motel 6 with my friends Kate and Keanna during the Sundance Film Festival, and

• my sleeping bag on the floor of this very apartment, or on top of the mattress, until now.

Seattle, Washington, February 11, 2006. Day 468. The adventure continues. :)

Where are some of the places you've slept?
