Oscars Meta & Discussion (it's not quite a final club but . . .)

Feb 22, 2011 01:31

These are the movies we talk about when we talk about film, when we talk about the movies that have inspired and influenced filmmakers and artists, when we talk about the films that have changed our culture, our conversations, when we talk about the images and performances that last, that endure that -

Wait.  No.  Sorry.  That’s this list:

This is an awesome post. I'm a bit of an Oscar hobbyist myself, but for some reason it's not something I've ever taken to online, so this is a truly wonderful condensation of all the commentary/chatter to me, so thank you for that.

unfortunately, because I'm not in the habit of having to articulate them extensively I can't offer any discussion worth a damn, but I just want to say, your take tallies very closely to mine. (I still think Fincher has a chance, but I'm rating the Coen Brothers' chances higher than his, but otoh Best Picture might be possible.)

in short, it's all politics!

WoW! Reading your "paper" from a very outside pov, I must say that it's very impressive and helpful for someone, like myself, ignorant about Oscar and American cinematography industry.

thanks dear :)

this is so detailed and well-thought out! thanks for posting it. I'm excited to watch the oscars this year, having seen more of the nominate movies than I usually do, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be disappointed when tsn doesn't sweep. even though I know it totally won't.

though I will say that I can still kind of see the "smart vs. heart" argument to some degree - it's just an overly simplified version of a viewpoint which makes some sense. not because tsn doesn't make viewers feel (AND HOW), but more because that feeling isn't an uplifting, positive one. I left tsn having loved it, but I also felt a little like I bit off more than I could chew, emotionally, and needed some time to process. there is no easy choice in who to side with, or root for, which I love, but it is very different than the last feeling one gets from tks, which is overwhelmingly positive.

so, I think what I'm saying is, it's not "smart vs. heart" so much "complicated vs. positive." IF THAT MAKES SENSE. feel free to disagree with me.

This was really interesting! I'm so glad you posted it; I don't know much about Oscar history/politics myself and so it was fascinating to get your insight.

Perfect post is perfect. It all makes so much sense reading about it here (should have seen me during the BAFTAs, my mood went downhill after HBC's acceptance speech).

In my head we'll win all the awards.*nods* And Jesse will almost faint while delivering his speech and Andrew will be all bouncy puppy and yes, it won't happen, but it's my head and nothing's impossible in there.
