The Hottest Karate Girl!
I've been craving for exploitation films the past few weeks so last week I went to Makati Cinema Square and looked for bad- looking DVD covers that feature violent looking titles and characters. I asked around for a copy of "Grindhouse- Planet Terror" (you know, the Rose McGowan with an armalite for a leg flick) when one of the dvd retailers asked me: "Ser yung luma lang po meron kami. Ok lang po ba?" Suprised (pleasantly), I said "Sige patingin". The seller showed me this cd:
It was so interesting because it was an actual copy of an old Grindhouse flick back from the 70's! And it was a double feature by Sonny Chiba! (the violent Karetista) so I bought it.
I popped in the DVD and the menu appeared. There were three options: Play The Bodyguard, Play Sister Street Fighter, and Start the Grindhouse Experience.
I clicked the third option and the Wahey starts. The "Experience" starts with a psychedelic swirly swirl ala-70's feeling special effects title card. It was the title card for the feature trailers. "Samurai Wars" was the featured "prevue" (as spelled in the title card). It featured lots of samurai and geisha and headless human blood sprinklers.
After the "prevue" the "featured film" started.
The Bodyguard
Hindi po ito ang Bodyguard ni Whitney Houston at Kevin Costner. This Karate flick by teh great Chiba is one boring and flat film story wise but a sure winner if you'll look at it from a grindhouse POV. It is real violent and bloody and sexy in a very funny way. You'll see arms and necks break, with matching sprinkling blood (ala lawn sprinkler), lots of nudity and lots of funny and bad acting. A real Grindhouse flick. Great!
Sister Street FIghter
Contrary to its cheesy title, Sister Street Fighter is a really cool film. Well, who can go wrong with a really cute Japanese girl who knows serious Karate who fights mustached ninjas, jumps off a hanging bridge and impales daggers on her enemy's cranium? She is the hottest karate girl I've ever seen. Meet Etsuko Shihomi!
She plays the role Tina Long, the sister of a Japanese police officer captured by a heroin drug lord as an experiment subject. To find her brother, she fights mustached thugs with wooden poles, daggers, nunchucks with the help of the great Sonny Chiba. A mercifull fighter in the beginning but as her enemies start to give her a really hard time, she becomes a figher of no mercy no sense of disgust for blood (yes she becomes a very bloody but cute karate- killer).
The two flicks are both no brainer films for the boys. (abrupt end)
