My husband was amazed by how long it took me to finish the book. He was mostly being sarcastic - it's 576 pages long.
In the future, you can make a copy of your soul and imprint it on a clay golem with a life span of 24hrs. Shortly into the story, the main character makes three of them and you get to follow them as they perform their separate adventures. I enjoyed the gimmick of it: what you've got is essentially one character with a total of four points of view. I wasn't sure how the plot could fill out 576 pages but was pleasantly surprised that it did so and passingly well at that.
The resolution of the novel was a little iffy for me. Of course, when you're talking about imprinting your personality into disposable vessels, you're going to get a metaphysical discussion in there somewhere but it was wackier than I liked. All in all, I think it was a good, solid, classic science fiction novel and I recommend it.
Not an Uplift novel.
