Intercon H Spoiler Version

Mar 05, 2008 22:26

I posted a non-spoiler version on
interconlarp.  This version is intended more for my non-larping friends (yes, I have a few of those) and will go into a bit more depth and will include possible spoilers and personal observations, so read at your own risk.  There is some redundancy with the other version.

In general, I had lower expectations for this Intercon.  Nothing grabbed me as it had at previous Intercons.  In all the previous ones there was one game that said to me "You must play me" and three out of four of those games are still in my top five.  The one loser was mostly a matter of poor casting than a bad game, though there were a few other characters who seemed to be in similar straits, so maybe there were structural problems as well.

Anyway...

I started Friday evening playing Ivan the Fool in Mystery at the Fairytale Reservation .  This was fun and a good warmup.  In retrospect I might have played it a little differently and had more fun.  But really, the best part was watching my son pwn the game at the end.  He was playing El Al'Din, an exchange Fairy Tale from Baghdad, but secretly he was Puck spying for the Fairies.  Be prepared for the sequel, Fairies vs. Fairytales.

Afterwards I went to a delightful birthday party for one of the GMs and met some really fun people.

Saturday morning I played Marius in Under My Skin.  This was an unusual improv/drama/group therapy sort of LARP, but it looked very intriguing.  This was something of a playtest as it turned out and there was definitely some confusion and concern, particularly over the character generation phase.  It helped that we all knew each other and had experience with polyamorous relationships.  It also helped that the women who played my wife and my new lover are both people that I've been attracted to for some time.  ;-)  I do agree that it would probably work better in a six-hour slot.   I also found it to be a bit of a humbling experience.  Given that I've been intellectually poly since about age 15 and actually practicing poly for about 15 years, I went in not expecting to get a lot out of it.  I was wrong.  Not that I can really articulate them but I do feel like I came away with some insights about myself in particular and relationships in general and had a lot of fun in the process.

In the convention within the convention (shorter one and two hour games for those who want more variety) I played:
  • Space Monkey in Monkeys, Monkeys, Monkeys.  This was, well, a whole barrel of fun. :-)  Space Monkey is basically a former space program test monkey, and thus has a number of clever tricks that none of the other monkeys can do.
  • Vinnie in Accordo Finale.  The game got off to a rocky start because of some player drops, but once we got going and into the game, it turned out to be quite amazing.  I was going to explain it here for the non-larpers, but really, I think I'd have to do it in person to have any chance of succeeding.
Saturday evening I was Lewis Deacon aka Cary Knight aka The Dodo in Alice.  This turned out to be the highlight of my weekend.  I was somewhat apprehensive when I signed up for the game; while I love Lewis Carroll, I'm usually not big on games with lots of angst.  However, I thought the casting was perfect for me.  Basically, I was the "beamish boy" from Jabberwocky (my favorite poem) only I was dumped by my lover and my spirit crushed before I could slay the Jabberwock...and I lost the vorpal blade.   Overall the game was extremely well written and well run.  Everyone I encountered seemed to be playing at the top of their form, and I was particularly impressed by the Red Queen, who it turned was being played by the GM from Under My Skin.

Finally, Sunday morning, after an excessive four hours sleep, I was part of the horde in Purging Purgatory.  Characters I remember playing were Johnny Cash, Indiana Jones, The Doctor, General Sherman, Wesley Crusher, and Nikola Tesla.  This was a lot of fun.  This was only my second horde style game and the first playing as part of the horde.

I am now too tired to elaborate, but will be more than happy to go on at length in person about any of my characters.

intercon, larp
