She says 'dangnabbit' and 'gosh darn' and 'hell' but that's about it.

Family
Parents:
Maria Espinoza: Maria was born in Puerto Rico but immigrated here with her family at the age of 3. She was raised to learn English, but her parents learned slower so she still spoke Spanish in her home. She works as a waitress at a local Mexican restaurant and struggles to care for her ailing husband.
Frank DeLuna: His family has lived in Texas for generations. He worked as a carpenter to support his family, but since finding out his kidneys are failing due to multiple myeloma (cancer) he hasn't been able to work at all. His wife is trying to make ends meet and they receive some support from Marisel and Ricky.
Sibling(s):
Javier DeLuna: Born in 1977, named after his maternal grandfather, Javier has always wanted the best with minimal effort. This led him down a very hard path in life when he started selling drugs for the Latin Kings. He's currently living in Houston, since he got out of jail.
Miguel DeLuna: Born in 1979, Miguel is an electrician after almost falling in to the same terrible life that Javier did. He was inspired when Marisel turned her life around and started learning his trade at community college. He's now married with 2 young kids of his own. He lives in Beaumont.
Enrique (Ricky) DeLuna: Born on Christmas Day in 1982, Ricky graduated from UT with a degree in Civil Engineering. He works for a firm in Dallas that constructs skyscrapers. He's happy with his life, and is closest to Marisel. He credits her for his ambition and self-development. He's looking to settle down like his brother has.
Children: None.
Family History: Marisel grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. The child of a Puerto Rican immigrant and a native Texan, she was raised with three brothers (b. 1977, 1979 and 1982) in a lower middle class family. Her two older brothers were always trouble makers but Marisel always idolized her eldest brother, Javier. Javi was recruited by the Latin Kings gang around 17 and by 19 was a full-fledged member. Marisel, only 14 at the time (1995), stole a car from a grocery store parking lot to impress her brother and ended up getting caught. Being a juvenile, she was sentenced to community service as a candy striper at Corpus Christi Medical Center and was required to attend tutoring after school. After working at the medical center for 2 years for community service, Marisel's community service was complete but she continued to work there. Her brother was arrested that summer (1997) on drug possession charges and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
This was a huge turning point for Marisel and she vowed to turn her life around, not wanting to end up like her Javi. She had been getting decent grades in school since she'd been on probation and applied herself even more during her senior year. She applied to University of Texas at Austin and was admitted. She couldn't afford the tuition and thought all her effort might be for nothing until she found she was eligible for a scholarship towards any medical profession through her work at the hospital. It covered most of her costs through college and Marisel worked harder than she ever had.
She was apart from her family during the semester and this was very hard on her. She loved her mother deeply and felt as though her other brothers might fall into the same lifestyle as Javi had. Luckily, her younger brother, Ricky, followed her example instead. Miguel, the middle brother, managed to step back from the lifestyle and started taking trade classes at Corpus Christi community college. Her father, however, did not escape the effects Javi's imprisonment as his children did. He started drinking (more than socially) and became angry and reclusive.
During her bachelor's program, Marisel dated casually but never found herself in a committed relationship. Her friends told her that she had "trust issues" after being abandoned by her older brother, but Marisel thought that was crap. Her brother, Ricky, joined her at UT during her junior year, although he was studying civil engineering. They were very close and he was very protective of her despite being 2 years younger. When Javi got out of jail, Marisel tried to help him reacclimate, even taking a semester off and taking summer classes to compensate for the time off. Javier didn't do well outside of prison after 5 years and quickly fell back in to his old habits. After Marisel found out he was selling drugs again, she gave him an ultimatum. She demanded he stay away from their brothers until he was ready to change. Javier didn't seem to care one way or another and this crushed Marisel. Her time spent with Javier ended up delaying her graduation by a year.
She graduated in 2004 and immediately went on to study for her FNP at University of Miami in fall of 2004. Ricky tried to convince her to take a year off, work and enjoy her youth but Marisel was too driven. She'd set her sights on working as a Certified Nurse - Midwife for MSF. She graduated with her ANP and Certified Nurse Midwife Master's in 2009. She spent the next year working at Dade Memorial and traveling with MSF before finally moving back to Texas in Oct 2010 when Ricky called and said that their dad was sick.

Mental Health: Marisel has learned to exude confidence but she's actually very unsure of herself. She has done things by herself for a very long time and living on her own in Dallas has started to wear on her. Marisel is lonely and it bothers her because she's not used to feeling that way.
Any Disabilities/Handicaps: Marisel is dyslexic.

Past Relationships: Marisel had casual boyfriends all through high school and her undergraduate career. She tried casual sex during this period and realized it was definitely not for her. At University of Miami, she dated a fellow for 2 years but got scared and left on an MSF trip to Haiti where she focused on immunizing children and providing birth control and pregnancy check-ups to women. She didn't return until after he had graduated and moved away. She still thinks about him occasionally. He's the only man she ever loved and now she's worried she'll never find that again.
