I haven't been online much because I started to get really busy around the beginning of April. My DS had to have a costume for a class project due April 9th and from there it just got a bit hectic with the sewing for a couple of weeks. Be warned, this is the first of many posts to come chronicling my month so far. They are mainly about sewing, baking and crafting and I'll likely post once or more a day for awhile. I've already started 6 posts in my blogging tool.
My DS's class was having a musical for their music class grade. It was called Bugz and he had to dress up like a bug but not just any bug. It had to be cute and whimsical. Some examples were like ladybugs wearing gloves and fancy dresses and army ants wearing camo. So after looking online and only finding girly bugs or more realistic bugs we had to think up of one ourselves to make with the supplies we had on hand. I wanted to do a computer bug with either left over PC parts or maybe a black t-shirt with lines of code on it but my husband thought it may be difficult to do and a bit of a stretch. So my next idea was the one we went with.
I made him into a bed bug. I had all this flannel laying around from an after Thanksgiving day sale at JoAnn's from years ago, it was only $1 a yard and some were regularly $14. And I had a teen girl's pajama pattern that we never got around to making. My son is a little stocky and had outgrown the boys pajama pattern I had so it was perfect. It took me a week but I got it done in time. The only thing that I forgot to shorten was the arm length. I added a second pair of arms with hands, a nightcap with antennas sewed on and a little bug sleeping in his pocket.
I think costuming is all about the little touches and accessories, without them they were just a pair of pajamas. I wanted to make slippers too but ran out of time and I didn't know if they would have stayed on. It actually was a lucky thing I didn't because he had to dance on stage. They had a total of three performances and he loved it and was really proud of his costume. He wears them like pajamas now and that was the added plus. The other plus was that the pants pattern was the best fitting one I've ever made for him. I'll probably make him shorts for summer and pants for the winter this year from them.
