Oh, wow... That's so very much like Sam, to try to get himself out and do all those things... and then to fall again! And now the Gaffer has missed the only clue!
I'm not going to have any fingernails left, but I'll be happy!
I'm completely hooked. It's fascinating to follow Sam's train of thought. And very canon, too!
This adventure is also quite original: most of the time, Sam's hurt consists of being sick and worry for Mister Frodo. We rarely get to see him in a fix like that, as the hero of a misadventure.
Yes, poor Sam, but at the same time he is not totally helpless. We get to see a resourseful gardener. I enjoy witnessing this (not very often shown in fics)aspect of him.
Still, I can't wait for him to be out of the hole, taken care of, healed, and (later) hiking with his Frodo!
Mariole, tell me you won't leave him there for weeks!
Well, not weeks, but I do have a bit more planned. I'm really glad you're enjoying this aspect of Sam. I've always viewed him as immensely competent on his own ground. True, through various bad chances he took a bad step, but he's got a plan and is acting on it.
I can't believe Sam doesn't get beaten up more! Well, after this bludgeoning, he'll be begging for a head cold. Thanks for reading, Nimue!
By "weeks", I meant for the update, which would be the same as having Sam suspended in time, in that hole. So for the story, it's going to be the whole three days then. Well, I feel for Sam, but it is not as painful to read as I feared, since he has the power to do something about it.
I knew there'd be trouble for Sam at the end of part 2, when I realised how his waving goodbye would be interpreted. :( I hope you aren't going to keep him down there until Frodo comes back (how long was it? 3 or 4 days, or longer? Didn't Frodo say something about seeing what he felt like doing and who he felt like visiting? :sends vibes to Frodo to tell him that what he *really* wants to do is turn back early:
As he raked and smoothed the soil among the lettuces, he glanced at the sky. No sign of rain.
   How's Sam going to survive without rain?
Yes, Frodo planned to be gone three days. Three. This could get bad. I'm sorry, but I'm just reporting what happened. I couldn't possibly be cruel enough to architect these problems, could I?
