I am a newly minted member of the freshly formed Boulder County Citizens Against Gun Violence. And yes, we are looking for a better acronym! Currently the group consists of the 21 folks who attended the nonpartisan meeting last night in Lafayette, with attendees ranging from Westminster to Boulder to Longmont.
We have a number of action items we intend to pursue, targeted at our elected representatives. We're going to congratulate and encourage those who share our views about sensible gun laws, and politely inform those who don't that we intend to do everything in our power to prevent them from getting re-elected. We can't let a lobby of 4 million people set the rules for the other 370 million of us.
Some of the folks there were very knowledgeable about which reps had which stance in various counties, so that was great. We also had a rep from Colorado Ceasefire, which is a group started by a Columbine parent after his son was murdered. They have a lobbyist who is shepherding various bills through the Colorado legislature right now. We also have Gov Hickenlooper eager to work with us, so the timing is good. As in the last election, Colorado is being watched as a tipping-point state, this time because of our wonderful mix of urbanites and sportsmen, so I feel anything we do here might well resonate nationally.
What I specifically wanted to ask is, does anyone in LJ land want to join me? If you're in Colorado, please let me know, and I'll send on info about events we have planned. If you'd like to do something similar in your state, I'll be happy to pass along our action plans, demo petitions, sample letters to the editor, and so on. I figure the more of us who speak up, the better our eventual laws will be!
Peace and long life,
Mariole
