Zitiron
"Zitiron".
В "Het boek der natuur" by Jacob van Maerlantzitiron, zitiron,(имя которого носит подозрительное сходство с тритоном) описывается так:
"zitiron". This is a strange beast found depicted in some medieval manuscripts. A zitiron is man-knight riding on or fused with a fish body.
Here are two examples, the first from from Queen Mary's Psalter, made in England around 1310-1320, and the second from the Book of Hours of William Lord Hastings, around 1480.

Aarschot, O.-L.-Vrouwekerk, misericord
another naval hero?
In there's a description of the zeeridder aka zitiron [which name bears a suspicious resemblance to triton]. The editor provides the following description: He wears a helmet of hard horny skin & has a shield on one side that is long, broad & hollow, to protect him from snakes & blows. The shield is attached to his body w/ strong sinews, is triangular, and is impenetrable. With his split hands [??] he's a formidable enemy. When caught, it is very difficult to inflict pain. These monsters are found in the seas near England. Heere endeth &c.
Hieronymous Bosch must have seen examples of zitirons in manuscripts as he closely mimics these in his Garden of Earthly Delights (created around 1504), and other paintings. It is obvious that Bosch was not entirely driven by imagination or fantasy, but had made a deep study of such imagery in the manuscripts of his time.
