Здесь картинки из двух старинных книг второй половины 17-го века.
Вместе с реальными животными, которые существуют и сейчас, мы видим драконов, грифонов и единорогов- считалось, что они реально существуют.
Животных рисовали по описаниям путешественников, поэтому кому как повезло: кто-то совсем на себя не похож, кто-то с человеческим лицом, а кого-то просто могли выдумать, как и людей с волчьими головами и т.п.

Mantichora
Мантикора, возможно, самое кровожадное и опасное из вымышленных существ. У нее туловище льва, человеческое лицо, голубые глаза и голос, подобный звучанию свирели. Но главные и самые ужасные ее черты - три ряда зубов во рту, ядовитое жало на конце хвоста, как у скорпиона, и отравленные шипы на хвосте, которые мантикора может выстреливать в любом направлении. Наконец, "мантикора" в переводе с фарси означает - "людоед".
Наиболее полное древнее описание мантикоры сделано во II веке н. э. Элианом. Он приводит несколько любопытных подробностей:
Manticore
"Всякого, кто приближается к ней, она поражает своим жалом... Ядовитые шипы на ее хвосте по толщине сравнимы со стеблем камыша, а в длину имеют около 30 сантиметров... Она способна победить любое из животных, за исключением льва".
