GIRANDOLES.

Girandole
Johnson, Thomas
1760-1765
'Girandole' is an Italian name for a wall light. Wooden wall lights were introduced in the late 17th century and were common by the mid-18th century. The Rococo style gave free reign to the carver's invention.
Flanking the painting are a pair of wall lights (girandoles) (James Pascall, possibly after a design by Matthias Lock, 1745) featured in Taking Shape.

girandole, elaborate wall bracket incorporating one or more candleholders and frequently a mirror to reflect the light.
An object of luxury, it was usually embellished with carving and gilding. Although the name is Italian in origin, girandoles reached the greatest heights of fashion (in the second half of the 18th century) in France and England. At the beginning of this period they represented the most exuberant expression of the Rococo.
Girandoles came into use about the second half of the 17th century, and were commonly made and used in pairs.
A girandole has always been, comparatively speaking, a luxurious appliance for lighting, and in the great 18th century period of French house decoration, the famous ciseleurs designed some exceedingly beautiful examples.
Girandoles, or lighting devices, have also been attached to looking glasses and furniture. Girandoles, Some popular mirrors, especially the convex style, and some large dressing glasses of the 19th century were known as "girandoles" because of the lighting devices mounted to their sides.
The English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale illustrated examples in the Gothic and Chinese taste in The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker’s Director in 1754. Ruined arches, Chinese temples and pagodas,
