Слева на портрете изображен Жан де Дентевиль, французский посол при дворе Генриха VIII, справа Жорж де Сельв, епископ Лавуа, посетивший Лондон в апреле 1533 года.
На картине мы видим двух человек в окружении предметов, образующих их мир и сферу их интересов, многие предметы связаны с жанром Vanitas: лютня, глобус, солнечные часы редкой конструкции в виде пирамидки, набор флейт.
Но самое странное, то, что находится у них под ногами, на полу некая серая плоскость. Это, пожалуй, первый случай в мировой живописи, когда демонстрируется анаморфозис (геометрическое искажение). Если приставить к низу картинки зеркало, то под определенным углом в нем можно увидеть череп.
