ПОСЕЙДОН, НЕПТУН, в древнегреческой мифологии и религии бог моря, сын Кроноса и Реи, дикий и гневливый брат Зевса и Аида, с которыми он поделил господство над миром. Посейдон получил в свое управление море по жребию. Как и Зевс, в искусстве Посейдон изображается бородатым мужчиной с трезубцем в руке. Его супруга - нимфа Амфитрита; их отпрыск Тритон также принадлежит к морской стихии. Кроме того, Посейдон считался отцом чудовищ (например, одноглазых киклопов). Однако первоначально (что отразилось и в его культе) он был еще и земным божеством, связанным с плодородием и пресными водами, насылающим землетрясения, а в некоторых областях - супругом Деметры, богини урожая, и покровителем коней (вид которых он иногда принимает сам). Посейдон отличался буйным нравом и стремлением сохранять свою независимость. Хоть он и был вынужден признавать главенство Зевса, он считал себя равным этому главному богу.
В римской мифологии культ Посейдона слился с культом италийского бога воды Нептуном.
