Дедушка Арчимбольдо был архиепископом, отец - художником.
Джузеппе начал карьеру в мастерских Миланского собора, создавая цветные витражи и фрески со сценами из жизни святых.
Сложно сказать, где и у кого он учился. Во всяком случае, прослеживается влияние Леонардо да Винчи; известно, что Арчимбольдо исполнял картоны для шпалер в Ферраре. В Праге он был декоратором и постановщиком праздничных представлений.
Весна. 1573. Париж, Лувр
Состоял на службе у Габсбургов в Австрии и Богемии (1562-1587); сначала - при имперском дворе Фердинанда I в Вене - как портретист-копировщик, затем, когда императором Священной Римской империи становится Максимилиан II (1564), Арчимбольдо - художник при дворе.
Он воспринимался друзьями как человек с универсальной эрудицией и очень развитым творческим гением. Большинство его современников, также известных людей, смотрели на него с восхищением из-за его талантов и его изобретательности не только в живописи, но также и в организации игр, свадеб, коронаций, процессий. Фактически, он становится артистическим директором императора Максимилиана II.
Он отвечал при дворе за архитектуру и театрально-художественное оформление всех мероприятий. В то же самое время он - инженер, создатель фонтанов, принимает участие в основании музея искусств. Арчимбольдо становится главным организатором турниров, ярмарок и роскошных празднеств для аристократии, учёных и художников. Всё это -чтобы прославить императора, чтобы укрепить его политическую власть и развлечь людей, представить монарха героем.
При поддержке Максимилиана он исполнил первый вариант серии «Времена года», который был представлен императору в день Нового года (1569).
В 1570 Арчимбольдо был послан в Прагу к Рудольфу, сыну Максимилиана, проектировать сложное театрализованное представление для Максимилиана (сюжет - смешанная классическая и чешская мифология) и остался служить Рудольфу II, когда тот поднялся на трон Габсбургов (1575) после смерти Максимилиана II.
При нём, кроме всего, он изобретал гидравлические машины.
Одиннадцать лет, который художник служил Рудольфу II, были, вероятно пиком его карьеры. Император чрезвычайно любил и ценил Арчимбольдо.
Арчимбольдо в эти годы пишет второй вариант «Времён года» (1573), посвящает императору красный кожаный фолиант, содержащий 150 рисунков ручкой и чернилами (1585).
В 1587 после многочисленных просьб Арчимбольдо Рудольф II разрешил ему возвратиться в родной Милан. В том же самом году Арчимбольдо получил просьбу императора продолжить писать для него, хотя он больше не служил при дворе. В 1591 написаны, вероятно, наиболее известные из его картин - «Флора» (1591) и «Вертумн» (1590-1591), которые он послал в Прагу.
В следующем году, 11 июля 1593, живописец умер.

Джузеппе начал карьеру в мастерских Миланского собора, создавая цветные витражи и фрески со сценами из жизни святых.
Сложно сказать, где и у кого он учился. Во всяком случае, прослеживается влияние Леонардо да Винчи; известно, что Арчимбольдо исполнял картоны для шпалер в Ферраре. В Праге он был декоратором и постановщиком праздничных представлений.
Весна. 1573. Париж, Лувр
Состоял на службе у Габсбургов в Австрии и Богемии (1562-1587); сначала - при имперском дворе Фердинанда I в Вене - как портретист-копировщик, затем, когда императором Священной Римской империи становится Максимилиан II (1564), Арчимбольдо - художник при дворе.
Он воспринимался друзьями как человек с универсальной эрудицией и очень развитым творческим гением. Большинство его современников, также известных людей, смотрели на него с восхищением из-за его талантов и его изобретательности не только в живописи, но также и в организации игр, свадеб, коронаций, процессий. При нём, кроме всего, он изобретал гидравлические машины.
Одиннадцать лет, который художник служил Рудольфу II, были, вероятно пиком его карьеры. Император чрезвычайно любил и ценил Арчимбольдо.
Арчимбольдо в эти годы пишет второй вариант «Времён года» (1573), посвящает императору красный кожаный фолиант, содержащий 150 рисунков ручкой и чернилами (1585).
В 1587 после многочисленных просьб Арчимбольдо Рудольф II разрешил ему возвратиться в родной Милан. В том же самом году Арчимбольдо получил просьбу императора продолжить писать для него, хотя он больше не служил при дворе. В 1591 написаны, вероятно, наиболее известные из его картин - «Флора» (1591) и «Вертумн» (1590-1591), которые он послал в Прагу.
В следующем году, 11 июля 1593, живописец умер.
