Biography
Painter and engraver: origins unknown. Worked in Venice in late 1490s, but from late 1500 in northern Europe. 1500 Nuremberg; by 1503 in Wittenberg working for Frederick the Wise; 1507-8 in Mecklenberg and Brandenberg; later in southern Netherlands, working for Philip of Burgundy and Margaret of Austria. All his woodcuts and a few of the earliest engravings were made in Italy; but most of the engravings were made in northern Europe.
