Partial coffee service ("Déjeuner Culture et Récolte du Cacao"), 1836

All of the scenes painted on this coffee service reflect activities connected with the cultivation of cocoa and the preparation of hot chocolate. The scenes are set in Mexico, and each composition includes specific references to some aspect of the growing, harvesting, and sale of cocoa beans, or the steps involved in transforming the beans into hot chocolate. The scenes provide a wealth of detail about these various activities, and the depiction of the preparatory steps as well as the utensils employed reflects a surprising degree of historical accuracy.

----------Plaque depicting Bernard Palissy, 1846---------

Plaque depicting Bernard Palissy, 1846
Painter of plaque: Nicolas-Marie Moriot (French, active 1828-48); Painter of enamels: Jacob Meyer-Heine (French, 1805-1879)
France; Sèvres

This framed Sèvres plaque is one of the most ambitious and original works of art produced in the Renaissance Revival style of mid-nineteenth-century France. Both the plaque and the elaborate frame pay homage to the flourishing of the decorative arts that took place during the French Renaissance. The scene on the plaque, by Nicolas-Marie Moriot after a painting by Charles Alexandre Debacq (1804-1853), portrays the Renaissance pottery Bernard Palissy burning the furniture in his house to fire his kiln.

The oval enamel-on-copper plaques that decorate the frame depict events from Palissy's life, and their grisaille decoration evokes Limoges enamels of the sixteenth century. The plaques were painted by Jacob Meyer-Heine, who was named head of the recently established enamel workshop at Sèvres in 1840. The dragons entwined with strapwork on the gilt-bronze frame by Armande Feuchère are drawn from the architectural vocabulary of the French Renaissance, and the biscuit porcelain figures modeled by Jean-Baptiste-Jules Klagmann (1810-1867) recall the stucco decoration of the Galerie François I at Fontainebleau, the supreme example of Renaissance art in France. The designs and molds for this plaque are preserved at the Sèvres manufactory.

Snuffbox, ca. 1815
Maker: Gabriel-Raoul Morel (French, active 1798-ca. 1827); School of Jean-Baptiste Isabey (French, 1767-1855) and possibly Madame Aimée-Zoë Lizinka de Mirbel (French, 1796-1849)
Gold, ivory

Made by Gabriel-Raoul Morel in about 1815, this snuffbox of matte and polished gold with scrolling acanthus design contains a removable medallion with a framed portrait miniature of Marie Louise (1791-1847) by Isabey. The portrait forms a cover to a secret compartment containing two other miniatures, one of Napoleon I (1769-1821), possibly by Mirbel, and the other of the King of Rome (François-Joseph-Charles, duke of Reichstadt, 1811-1832) by Isabey
