On the West Orange Trail

Jun 29, 2009 18:04

Haven't been feeling the blogging bug for the past few days for a number of reasons, so, as a filler, some random and not particularly great pictures that have been on my computer for awhile:

We live about two tenths of a mile from the West Orange Trail, a 22 mile bike/hiking/kidlets on Big Wheels/happy doggies trail running on old railroad lines through west Orange County. (The cops found my trike - and kids riding on it - on this trail.)

The trail has trees, restaurants, water fountains every mile or so, benches every half mile or so, and a few other things.

Like horsies.

And the occasional native Florida ostrich and peacock. What precisely these are doing in not all that rural central Florida I have not a clue. Frankly, of the two, the ostriches were far more startling, though I can't explain why - with the ostriches, my main thought was, "What the --" and with the peacock, I said, "Oooh, peacock! Horsie!" For those about to note that "horsie" is a terrible term for a marine biologist to use, I do not use biological language when dealing with species that I know zilch about, which includes all horses. That particular horse farm also has some little horses that might be ponies, or might be miniature horses - I'm not the person to ask - but sometimes the peacock goes up to them and squawks loudly, doubtless fulfilling some critical ecological function, or more likely, giving the peacock equivalent of "horsies."

Alas, pictures of the ostriches are still forthcoming.

Lake Apopka.

And if nature is a bit too much for you, well, you can always just do this.
