So despite feeling like utter crap over the last several days, I headed out today for a couple of hours to the Winter Garden Garden Fest, which featured orchids, bonsai, various vegetables, and a Genuine Florida Camel.
"What?"
"Well, the camel was born in Miami. So, he's a genuine Florida camel."
"Not if he was born in Miami," someone else objected.
Dubious geographical descriptions aside, the event also featured something that really intrigued me -- new pathway building materials made out of recycled rubber, that can be customized into ramps and pathways around your house. The intriguing part, for me, is that these pathways are very smooth, and although not as hard as concrete to fall on, don't "give" as much as the squishy surfaces used around playgrounds or, for that matter, most carpets, which I find difficult to navigate on medium/bad days.
"Could you use this as house flooring?" I asked.
"We haven't," said the company representative. "But I guess."
Another grower was selling raspberry canes, which also raised my hopes - I know raspberries can be grown just a little north of here, but does anyone (other than someone eager to sell me raspberry canes) know if these can actually be grown in Orange/Seminole/Lake counties? Because one of the all time best things about Illinois, Connecticut and New York was being able to head out and pick fresh raspberries off the bushes.
And, on a small note, this was the first such event that I was able to go to all on my own, for a full year. Small victories. Very small.
