Las Olas Art Festival

So over the weekend I headed out to the Las Olas Art Fair with a friend, an event that could be summed up in one word: overcrowded.

Don't get me wrong: I love art fairs, especially those of this type, which along with fairly typical run of the mill paintings and standard bronze statues often offers some spectacularly beautiful or astoundingly inventive stuff, causing me later to overuse adverbs, but that's ok. Art fairs, for example, introduced me to Scott Menaul, Karen Seamon (most of you will appreciate her erotic work), and Julia Watkins's Energism paintings (sadly not really displayed on this page, and I don't really like the rest of her work) and many others. And when I can see this in the company of limited crowds, I quite enjoy this, and even with the mobs at the fair, much fun was had. But the mobs, if good for the artists, were rather less good for the observers. I rather hope that next year the Fair gets extended a few blocks out, changing from a double row of booths to a single row, allowing for some walking space and breathing room, and the ability to be able to pause, look, observe and feel the art, rather than get distracted by wondering what precisely is the person behind me digging into my butt?
