Wekiva River

Yikes. Did I really let over a week go by before posting about this? Yes, yes, I did. In my defense...no, I really don't have anything to say there. Onwards.

So, yes, my brother and I headed out to the Wekiva River a couple of weekends back, to take advantage of the very few remaining sorta cool mornings before it becomes too hot to move (like, say, not at random, today). I even got on a canoe with an electric motor. In general, I am not a boat person these days -- one movement from side to side, and I am not very happy -- but if you can promise me that the boat won't be moving very much, and barely from side to side at all, this can be a good thing. The Wekiva, a flat, slow moving river that meanders from freshwater springs out to the St. John's River, is that sort of river.

As always, my camera took one look at the river and said, wait, we're outdoors? I hate you. It grumbled about the light all the way down river and on the way back, when the light absolutely could not have been more ideal, announced that it really didn't have batteries. (This was a lie.) So, my pictures, not exactly good, but here they are.

Because my brother has a severe allergy to crowds, we started at Katie's Landing:

Katie's Landing is a small public park on the one section of the Wekiva that still has private homes with little boat docks and pavilions on the river (and for those of you wondering about getting me an appropriate Christmas present, one of those homes would do just fine, thanks.) Note the lack of people.

Nobody seems to know who Katie is, or why she claimed this landing.

The heavy grasses of the water.

Although sometimes, the water looks deceptively clear of tangles.

Spatterdock on the river.

The river teems with waiting alligators.

Me: Eh. Another alligator.

Camera: The light sucks.

Me: We're outside. In daylight. Barely a cloud. You could not ASK for more light.

Camera: Oh, I could.

Me: Would you just click!

Alligator: Speaking of light, I think I've had enough of it. Time to slip beneath the water for awhile.

(On a related note, this is probably NOT the best place for a swim, although manatees make the more than occasional attempt, and further up the river, at the springs, is what I'm told is an excellent swimming spot mostly alligator free. Also, in the summer, an incredibly popular swimming spot, since the water stays a constant cold.)

More spatterdock.

In general, my camera was also not fond of the many turtles ("wrong light!"). But I thought this one was kinda cute.
