This would be the alternative game "World-eating giants of Catan" where the goal is to somehow survive when the world is being nommed out from under you...
You could have gumdrops for settlements, big puffy homemade marshmallows for cities, little candies for the roads....and of course half the goal would be not eating your pieces before the end of the game...
I like Cities and Knights, but 1) it's a longer game, and 2) it does have a problem if you are playing either a 4 or 6 player game, which is that one person almost immediately gets behind, and then stays behind. On the other hand, it offers a lot more opportunities for deep strategies...
Settlers is mostly awesome, but does have that flaw of being completely on-the-rails just a few turns in. If you aren't one of the top two contenders early on, all you can do is be a spoiler.
I find that's less true of a three or five person game, if definitely true of a four or six person game - to the point where I've sometimes decided to play a four person game on a six person board, and just up the point total needed to win. With four people on a four person board, someone does get shut out - but, at least that person can be a spoiler.
In Cities and Knights, the problem is that fourth person is always shut out (and sometimes the third person), usually very early on, and because it's a long game, that person is shut out for hours - and has fewer opportunities to be a spoiler. I realize that the pirates/barbarians are supposed to even things out, but generally they make matters much worse. I love the complexity of the game, but if all the players aren't into Cities and Knights, or at least Settlers, it becomes a problem with one or two players bored and desperate for the game to end, like, now.

I can't decide whether I should be threatened, or relieved.
