Rosh Hashanah baking

I tried two new recipes yesterday, and they both came out really good. The first was the challah bread from Peter Reinhart's Artisan Breads Every Day book. I halved the recipe to make just one ginormous loaf instead of two, and sprinkled on both poppy and sesame seeds, and I think this was the tastiest challah I've ever made. I had to use all my willpower not to scarf down the whole loaf with dinner. The second recipe was for these apple turnovers, which also turned out great. I appreciated the use of store-bought puff pastry, because now that I'm employed again, spending half a day folding butter into pastry dough is no longer in the cards. (In general, I've had good luck with John Kanell's recipes. He used to be a science teacher and it shows -- his instructions and videos are always super clear and easy to follow.)

I might try making French toast from the challah tomorrow, assuming we don't eat it all today.
