Thoughts on SPN 4.03

Okay, I confess, Show managed to sucessfully fake me out. All summer, I was sure that Sam was going to be Lucifer's vessel. But then they had a whole episode setting up Nick, and Dean was Michael's vessel, and I thought, okay, I'm wrong, Sam's not it. BUT THEN HE IS! PSYCH! Nicely done, Show.

Really liked that opening montage of the boys going about their separate lives. The shot of Dean with the blood spatter on his face after killing the vampire mirrored the one in "Bloodlust," and signified the same thing: that Dean is all messed up over family issues and taking it out in violence.

Sam burns his fake IDs, but still uses a fake name and gets a menial, low-paying job presumably off the books (unless he kept at least one fake ID). Those are not the actions of someone who's trying carve out a stable place in society for himself. Sam may have quit hunting for the time being, but he's not even trying for normal anymore. He's just sort of... going through the motions of life. Oh, Sam. *wibbles*

Bobby managed to be totally awesome despite being on screen for all of thirty seconds. ♥ ♥ ♥ Bobby.

The brothel scene was dumb and kinda faily, but the interplay between Dean and Castiel made me enjoy it. I love Castiel the mostest when he's all odd and socially clumsy and slightly off-putting and really, really bad at passing for human. His DEMONSDEMONSDEMONS thing when he was supposed to be pretending an FBI agent was pretty hilarious too.

I want to know when and how Dean and Castiel ahd their original conversation about personal space.

The guy playing Raphael is really good, can we keep him? Also, I want to see an archangel who isn't a dick. I'd vote for Michael, but we can't see Michael unless he possesses Dean, and I don't want to see that. Unless Michael has a plan B the way Lucifer did. My advice to Michael: if you have a plan B that doesn't involve Winchesters, go with it right now. It'll make life so much easier in the long run.

Nice to see Sam really kicking ass in a fight, especially against guys who presumably have similar skills and training. I do wish Lindsey had at least tried to do something to rescue herself instead of just being Girl Hostage. Because otherwise, I really liked her. I hope she keeps being not-evil and not-dead.

I was so proud of Sam when he spit that blood out. I wish Dean had been there to see it.

I wish one of those three hunters had been a woman. Actually, that would've been a good place to bring Tamara back, given that she has a history with Sam and specializes in demon-hunting. Then again, if they don't bring her back, they can't kill her.

Poor Sammy, he's so screwed.

Also, I'm sad that wasn't the real Jess.

Oh, Dean. That was the least convincing profession of happiness in the history of ever. Nobody bought it. Seriously. The dust mites in the back seat were going "Liar!"

Sam being Lucifer's vessel pretty much screws Raphael's theory that it was Lucifer that resurrected Castiel and removed Sam and Dean from the scene. Dean and Castiel don't know this, of course, but I wonder if Raphael does. Like, does he really believe what he said or was he just screwing with Castiel's head. Or just trying to convince himself that God is dead because the alternative -- that his father has abandoned him -- is so much worse.

I do kind of love the fact that they're explicitly parallelling John Winchester to God.

This season is making me very happy so far. Worried, but happy.
