I have all sorts of meta that I've been saving up all season, and I will post it eventually, but right now, I'm just focusing on the finale.
No, Bobby, family is not supposed to make you miserable, though they often do. People in general aren't supposed to make you miserable, though they often do. Difference is, when someone you have no connection to makes you miserable, you can decide they're an asshole and avoid them, but when family makes you miserable you're kind of stuck with them, unless you want to go the "walk out that door and don't come back" route. Bobby's whole speech to Dean had a strong sense of "writers trying to come up with something profound in a hurry" to me. But hey, it got Dean to try and make it up with Sam, so I'll forgive.
The episode left it ambiguous as to who actually messed with the voice mail on Dean's phone. I'm pretty sure it's Ruby. Partly because of the way she urged Sam to listen to it, and the expression on her face when he did. But mostly because that was a deliberate, targeted attempt to psychologically manipulate Sam, and who's been expertly manipulating Sam all season? Ruby, that's who. The angels have concentrated their energy on Dean, and have mostly ignored Sam aside from making sure that he physically gets to where they want him to be. The best example being "It's a Terrible Life," where they go out of their way to make Dean's life attractive but leave Sam as a bored tech support guy in a cubicle. The angels just haven't cared about Sam's motives at all. Either they assumed that he'd do what they wanted him to do because that's the sort of monster he is, or they could see that Ruby had it covered.
I love that it took that final "rejection" from Dean to truly push Sam over the edge. I love that it took the combined year-long effort of both heaven and hell to keep the boys apart and at odds when it counted, and even then it didn't last when they finally realized what was going on.
I'm gonna miss Ruby. Not just because she was the only woman left on the show or because I'm one of about three people on the planet who actually liked Genevieve Cortese, but because I really liked her storyline. The long con she played on Sam was really clever, and I would've liked to see her stick around to mess with the boys' heads some more. It would've been great if the show had found some way to clue the audience in on her treachery without cluing Sam in. Then she could've pretended to be all surprised when Lillith's death released Lucifer, and continued pretending to be on Sam's side and making all sorts of trouble.
I'm very glad Castiel finally came through in a pinch. Also, loved the last scene with him and Chuck. (And they didn't kill Chuck! Yay!) I think there should be a spinoff series where Castiel loses his grace, and Chuck loses his prophetic powers (no need for them now that Lucifer's risen), and they live together Odd Couple-style in Chuck's house. Chuck can't write the Supernatural books anymore, but Castiel discovers a knack for writing trashy romance novels. There would be wacky hijinks. Yes.
Zachariah makes a great villain. I hope he comes back next season to be wonderfully smug and slimy for many episodes before finally getting his comeuppance.
I hope they get somebody really good to play Lucifer next season.
In conclusion, my boys together, facing the apocalypse, yay! This season has made me very happy (in an angsty and heartbroken sort of way), and I cant' wait till the next one. So... is it September yet?
