My favorite chapter! Because a few pranks are absolutely necessary!
Chapter 4 - The date that went bad
When Marilena realized what she had done she opened the door again. She kept staring at him. No words could come up.
“I am sorry” he said in broken English. “I would like to ask you for a rendez-vous.”
The girl tried to imagine how many times had he rehearsed those simple words.
“So ka... all right. Hai” she replied.
“Yoshi! In five minutes?”
“Wakarimasita!” The fact that he had memorized those phrases for her was really sweet. But how could she be prepared in 5 minutes? She wore quickly the t-shirt and knee-length pants that she had also worn the previous day, washed her teeth and she was ready. She also grabbed Arsinoi’s note before leaving.
“You are amazing!” Kazuya said.
“Do you learn English with High and Mighty Color?” Marilena asked him.
“No, with Akanishi Jin.”
“…”
They went to a big cafeteria, one of those that do not have the tables very close one to another. They found one and sat down and looked at each other until the waiter came and Kazuya ordered two filter coffees. At some point when he moved his head she made out behind his longish hair something like a small headphone in his ear and a wire was going inside his T-shirt. It was one of those things she had noticed in concerts but she didn’t pay any attention. She just took out very discretely the paper with the notes and left it on her knees.
“You have nice breasts!” Kazuya announced unexpectedly.
Marilena stared at him and tried to hide her breasts with her hands. Kazuya’s mouth opened slightly and then he turned his head aside.
“Jin, you asshole, what did you tell me to say to her?” he whispered.
“Relax, man. It’s ok! I will tell you what to do now.” Jin replied in Kazuya’s headphone.
The truth was that Jin was not very far away. He was hiding behind an armchair some meters away from Kazuya’s and Marilena’s table, together with Arsinoi. They took turns and carefully tried to see what was going on with the happy couple. Jin had forgotten Arsinoi’s kick and now they acted like buddies.
Meanwhile Marilena thought that it would be better to talk about something else and looked at Arsinoi’s paper. “How did you spend your day?” she read at some point. Great. That would make him speak.
“Don’t kid with me. I know you are gay” she read the Japanese translation.
But no. This didn’t make Kazuya speak. His eyes open wide, he obviously wanted to reply but couldn’t.
“What?” he exclaimed.
Marilena couldn’t understand what was going on.
“What’s going on?” Kazuya turned his head and whispered again.
“Ah, I understand what you mean” he said finally, after listening carefully to what Jin was telling him. “My previous relationship was with my boss.”
Bad synchronization because Marilena just spat out the sip of coffee she managed to take while Kazuya was listening to Jin’s instructions.
“No way!” she whispered then, while Kazuya was thinking that Jin would have a lot of explaining to do. Marilena looked at her notes again. “I would like a toast” she read somewhere. Yeap, food. That was what she needed then.
“Don’t worry. I will make a man out of you” she read out loud the translation.
Kazuya could only hide his face with his hands and just then muffled laughter could be heard from somewhere near. The boy got up and went towards the source of the sound, the armchair on his right. Marilena followed him, after leaving the money for the coffees on the table, so that the waiter wouldn’t follow them as well.
Both Jin and Arsinoi stopped laughing when Kazuya looked at them angrily. And he was really scary as he was standing above them and caressed his fist. They got up and started running towards the toilets. Kazuya run after them. He couldn’t follow Arsinoi in the women’s toilet but he had no problem getting into the men’s one. And it was extremely easy to spot Jin. He couldn’t be but inside the only closed cubicle. He couldn’t see his legs because he had climbed on the toilet but there was no need to verify. He run back in the coffee shop and took a glass of water which he later poured on Jin’s head from the cubicle next to his. Marilena was waiting outside the toilet until Kazuya got out together with a wet-haired Jin and Arsinoi came out of the women’s toilet. Ok, it was now clear for Marilena what the glass of water Kazuya was so anxious to get was needed for.
Both Jin and Arsinoi apologized for ruining the date and Kazuya whispered “next time” in Marilena’s ear before leaving with Jin.
“Na na na Harukana yakusoku” Marilena started singing out loud as she was walking away from them with Arsinoi, so that he knew she had got the message.
Many days passed by. Marilena started attending her Japanese courses again and with renewed interest she became better and better, learning new words every day. They started getting out all of them: Arsinoi, Maki, Yoshiko and Satoshi, Maki’s boyfriend. By practicing Japanese with them Marilena was now able to say basic things in Japanese and she decided to try and send her first SMS to Kazuya.
“Hello! How are you doing?” she wrote. She looked at the screen and was thinking if she should send it or not. Arsinoi saw her staring at the screen of her mobile phone and the little devil she was, she grabbed the phone and saw that a message was about to be sent to a certain number. OK she pressed without asking any questions.
“I am fine! I’ve missed you. Can we meet tomorrow?” the answer came almost immediately. Arsinoi looked at Marilena and then scrolled the screen in order to see who the sender of the message was. Kamenashi Kazuya. Their meeting would not be secret anymore.
“Of course” Arsinoi replied instead of Marilena. “I’ll be waiting for you. At about nine o’clock.”
“You have another date with Kazuya tomorrow” she informed Marilena, who did not know if she should be glad or scared.
In any case, she didn’t have the time to be glad because Maki and Yoshiko arrived. They wanted to go to a night club again that night. Marilena didn’t want to go and tried to explain to Arsinoi that she found it boring, but they couldn’t discuss it because Arsinoi’s cellular rang. She saw it was Koki and went in the bathroom in order to talk to him undisturbed.
The other three girls, curious to see who Arsinoi was talking with run to glue their ears on the bathroom door. They run so fast that they fell on the door with a thumbing sound and Arsinoi realized that they were eavesdropping. She told Koki that they should talk later and opened the door so suddenly that the girls fell down in the bathroom, one on another.
“I’m sorry girls. I have something else I have to do tonight. You have to go to that club alone” Arsinoi announced and went in the bedroom in order to get dressed.
“Who was she talking with?” Yoshiko asked.
“I couldn’t understand” Marilena replied.
