Smoke and ashes...

Aug 25, 2007 23:08

Saturday evening in the middle of ashes… The whole country is in a state of emergency. Even help from many European countries is arriving. If all those fires are caused by arsonists, hell, the whole country is full of them. They even found an arson mechanism in the forest at Imitos, a mountain outside Athens, next to houses. What’s more, somebody called the fire brigade and directed it to another place. Airplanes that are trying to extinguish the fires at Peloponnesus had to be called back at Attica. In Peloponnesus, a 75 old woman (I didn't keep notes from what I heard on TV, so maybe I got that wrong) is accused of arson and murder by neglect. She was cooking in her yard. Ah… don’t leave old people alone! They are a danger for themselves and apparently others as well.
The smoke and the ashes from Imitos are transported till Piraeus. Plus, the ashes that are transported from Euvoia (a big island just outside Attica) make the atmosphere horrible. The smoke is hiding the sun… I had to finish the translations I am making with my throat itching slightly and the internet connection is dead. Electricity was also cut off here, but only for a little while. But I consider myself lucky. People died. Firemen and people who refused to abandon their houses. (mainly old, but not exclusively as many also got burned in their cars while trying to escape…) I think this is the worst summer that ever happened in Greece…
I am going to post this when the internet connection is back…
And an article from BBC with more information.
