I started watching Hanayome to Papa (Papa and the bride). It’s entertaining and sweet and it is a nice mixture of realism and surrealism.
The story is about a father, his daughter and her boyfriend.
The realistic part: the father, Mr. Uzaki Kentaro had promised to his dead wife that he is going to take care of their daughter until she gets married. The daughter is now 20 years old, and the old rules still apply: no overnight stays, no boyfriend, curfew at 19:00. She is so lucky she finally managed to have a cell phone. The poor man really needs another woman in his life after 19 years of celibacy.
The unrealistic part: how convenient that the first day of her job, Aiko Uzaki meets Seiji Miura (played by Junnosuke Taguchi!!!). Around the same age she is, cute, smart, calm, reassuring and above all, he is desperate to marry! His ex girlfriends have all dumped him because they found him too serious for their taste. He is more than serious. So serious he is not even afraid of his obsessive father in law (much). He even admires him! I think Seiji was lucky Aiko didn’t hear him saying that he would like to be like her father!!!
The funny thing is that although Mr. Uzaki is totally stubborn in order to accept Seiji as a son-in-law, he can hardly resist his charm. There are moments Seiji acts so cute and Mr. Uzaki is like… “He must not break my resistances, no, he really mustn’t… If I start loving him and give him my daughter, then… I won’t be able to torture my daughter any more!” What an unbelievable trio…
Maybe the most interesting character in the series is the boss, Narumi Shunichi, played by Koizumi Kotaro. Austere, he never says a word more than necessary, seemingly cruel but you know that when he remains silent his mind and his heart are working together. A truly amazing man in my opinion.
