Happy Birthday, Shishido-san )
Happy Birthday to Me. I don't even want to think how old I am right now.What a day!
Shishido was looking out on the balcony on his birthday, just pondering mostly about life and where it has taken him for the past few years. It was the usual Birthday blues for him, it's been a while since he really had a happy birthday anyway. He took the day off at least, and he was just planning to sleep in and let the day pass him by. It was, after all, just a day.
Normally, he would have a Vodka tonic in his hand at this time. But since, Choutarou appeared back in his life, he has been trying to be good. He had a cup of hot chocolate in his hand- for some odd reason, hot chocolate has been his comfort drink. Maybe it has something to do with that night that changed everything.
He was startled as he heard the familiar tone that meant only one thing. Choutarou was calling.
It was Shishido's birthday, and Ohtori couldn't help the huge smile he had on his face as he walked the streets of New York. If he knew Shishido, his friend would be doing nothing in particular, letting the day just pass by. And Ohtori would have none of that.
As he approached Shishido's apartment, he pulled out his cell phone.
"Hello? Shishido-san? Did I catch you at a bad time?"
Ohtori absently reached one hand into his back pocket, where he gently fingered the present he had found for Shishido. It wasn't much, but he hoped that his friend would like it.
"Nah, I'm just chillin, Mama Choutarou," he teased as he was being called by his last name again. " What are you up to? Wanna come over?"
Yeah, maybe he needed some company today. He was sad and he didn't want to slip up. He has been sober for about 2 months now and has not touched the stuff. For him, he wanted to stay that way.
Besides, it was his birthday. He wanted to see his friend.
Ohtori groaned. At this rate, he'd never shake that nickname.
"I'm a little busy right now, Shishido-san." Ohtori cringed to himself, not enjoying the fact that he was lying to his friend. "But if it's okay with you, I'll drop by later on tonight?" It was Shishido's birthday, and even though he was going to surprise him, he didn't want to sound like a total jerk.
He reached the apartment, slipping in as someone exited.
"Sorry, Shishido-san. I have to go now. I'll talk to you again real soon, okay? Bye!"
Opening the door to the stairwell, Ohtori grinned. All according to plan.
Shishido sighed. "Yeah, see ya." He pressed the button on his cell and put it down. Taking a sip of his hot chocolate, he decided whether to take a nap or watch some old movies
Some birthday this is turning out to be. He wondered if even Choutarou remembered. He looked at the TV and decided against the movies. He put the cup down and laid himself on the couch to take a nap. The faster evening gets here, the better.
In Ohtori's opinion, he had never run up those stair so quickly. Even though he was in pretty good shape, even he was a little winded after 10 flights. He caught his breath just inside the stairwell before quietly making his way to Shishido's door. He quietly slid the spare key Shishido had given him into the door, letting himself in.
Cracking the door open, he spotted Shishido napping on the couch, and the sight of it made his heart flutter a little for some reason. Tip-toeing his way into the apartment, he crouched down next to his friend before gently flicking Shishido's forehead.
"Happy Birthday, sleepy head." Ohtori spoke quietly, but couldn't help the huge grin on his face.
Shishido's eyes flew open as he heard the familiar voice."Goddammit. I thought you were coming later?" He grinned. He was glad his friend was here, its better than taking a nap and celebrating his birthday alone.
"What the hell are you doing here!"
Ohtori pretended to be shocked at Shishido's greeting, though he expected nothing less.
"I was going to spend the day with you because it's your birthday, but with a greeting like that maybe it's best if I leave and come back later."
Ohtori's lips couldn't help but curl up into a smile. "Happy Birthday, Shishido-san."
"Thanks," he grinned happy that his friend was the first and the only one to greet him. "NO! NO! Stay! I -- want some company."
Ohtori playfully bopped his friend on the head with a nearby pillow, letting his light laughter fill the apartment.
"Of course I'm staying. I wouldn't trek all the way up 10 flights of stairs just to turn around and leave. But, the birthday boy needs to tell me what it is he'd like to do on his special day."
Ohtori had some very vague ideas, but being relatively new to the city he wanted to make sure that if there was something Shishido wanted to do that he didn't' know about, it still got covered.
"Nothing really," Shishido admitted. " I wanted to go to nap and sleep the day away." He said throwing the pillow back at his friend. "I kinda wanna see the city." He said looking out the window at New York City.
He had been living there for a few months now and really haven't explored it.
"That sounds like a great idea, Shishido-san!" Ohtori hardly had a chance to see the city in the flurry of starting school. This would be a great chance for them to see all the famous tourist attractions around the city.
"There's just one condition, Shishido-san" Ohtori pretended to be serious. "You have to let me treat you today. It's your birthday, so I don't want you paying for anything."
Shishido sighed melodramatically, "OK, well then, let me get dressed and we can head out." He stood up from the couch and headed to his room.There might be something going on for his birthday after all.
He picked out an outfit quickly, making sure it looks really nice and the ones that he set aside that were pretty new. He put on a white shirt, jeans and took his Tan blazer/jacket that he's been saving. He also dug around for his digital camera and made sure it had batteries. One look at his appearance said that it was a special day for Shishido Ryo. he never really dressed up for anything. But he did today.
Chuckling to himself, Ohtori simply nodded as Shishido went to change. His friend would never change, always a little over dramatic. But Ohtori had to admit that he wouldn't change a thing about Shishido for the world.
While Shishido was busy changing, Ohtori pulled out the small box in his pocket, turning it around in his hand carefully. He was feeling a little nervous about the present, even though he had put a lot of thought into it. But hearing Shishido coming out of his room, he quickly shoved it back into his pocket.
Ohtori paused for a moment, not sure what to say. Shishido looked amazing. Well, not that he didn't always look good, but today was extra special.
"Wow. Now you're making me feel a bit under dressed." Ohtori joked, as he raked his hand through his slightly unruly silver hair. Clad in khakis, shirt, and sweater, Ohtori somehow didn't feel like he quite matched up to Shishido.
"You look more than fine," Shishido blurted out, then coughing. "But yeah, thanks. It IS my birthday. I kinda wanna look different."
He was now wondering what lay ahead for his day. It was the first time someone wanted to celebrate his birthday and to him it was weird.
"Ummm.. where do we go first?"
Furrowing his brow in thought, Ohtori considered the possibilities. He pulled a small tourist map out of his pocket.
"Well, I haven't exactly worked out the route yet, but I was thinking we should go to Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and Times Square at the very least. And Chinatown might be nice for lunch. What do you think, Shishido-san?"
"Sounds like a plan," Shishido smiled as he came over Choutarou and looked at the map with him. "Let's figure it out once we get to Central Park. "
He was having fun already and it was only beginning. He wondered if birthdays really always felt like this. The last birthday he was really happy about was when he was a child - he thinks.
Ohtori nodded and made his way to the door, holding it open for Shishido.
"After you, birthday boy." Ohtori bowed comically as his friend walked past him. Today was going to be fun. He had that kind of feeling.
~~~~~~~~
Central Park simply astounded Ohtori. He hadn't seen so much greenery in the city since coming here. It reminded him a bit of Ueno Park. And it seemed that they had free concerts here during the summers too.
"Wow...this place is amazing..."
"This whole area is a park? I cant even walk one end of it to another!" Shishido's eyes were big as saucers. "Well, maybe we can. We did do 100 laps when we were in Hyoutei." He smiled. It was a lovely fall day, the whole park was filled with trees that were starting to turn orange, and it was beautiful. "Ne, doesn't it look like the Sakuras? Only they are leaves and they're fiery." He asked Choutarou with a smile.
His heart was light today. For the first time, he thought that he would have a Happy birthday.
Ohtori laughed as a gust of wind blew past them, carrying the happy sound with it. "Maybe we could, but seeing as it's your birthday, I'd rather we didn't run the equivalent of 100 laps." The two walked quietly for a while, watching the leaves fall from the trees.
"It kinda does remind me of going to sakura watching parties back home."
The two friends walked and talked, and Ohtori seemed to lose track of time. When he looked at his watch, his eyes went wide with shock. "Oh! We should get going, Shishido-san! Otherwise there won't be enough time to see all the things we wanted to!"
"You're right," Ryo nodded eagerly. "Where to next? OOOH. Lets get on the boat for the Statue of Liberty!!"
"It's your call, Ryo. It's your birthday, after all." Ohtori glanced at his beat up little map before grabbing Shishido's arm and breaking out into a run. "But we'll have to hurry if we want to make the next boat!"
Despite the fact they were both running full tilt, Ohtori couldn't stop laughing. He was having a great time, and hoped that Shishido was too. All their running had paid off though, and hey managed to be the last two let onto the boat.
"Geez, Shishido-san....you certainly haven't stopped being the dash specialist!" Ohtori leaned on a railing to catching his breath as the boat left port.
"Of course! I didn't do all that training for nothing!" Ryo said breathing hard but still alright. Adrenalin was running through him as he jumped up and down to cool himself off. He leaned down on the railing feeling the nice breeze in the air. It was so perfect, the sun, the water, the wind... Choutarou. He could not ask for anything more.
He looked over the boy who was standing next to him smiling. He had to catch his breath. The boy had a beautiful smile, he had to admit, he was melting. "Choutarou..." He couldn't think of anything to say. "Thank you."
Oblivious to what Shishido was feeling, Ohtori put his arm around his friend and gave the brunette's shoulders a light squeeze. "Hey, don't mention it Shishido-san...Anything for you..." Ohtori's voice trailed off as he watched the wind toss Shishido's hair in all different directions. He wished he had a camera because he knew it would always remain a beautiful memory to him. There was a charged silence between the two before Ohtori realized he still had his arm around Shishido. He cleared his throat as he removed it, rubbing the back of his neck in a slightly awkward manner.
"Hey look! We're almost there!" Ohtori leaned a bit on the railing, and pointed towards the island with excitement.
O.o
Shishido snuggled into his arms feeling the strength of the younger boy's. "Thanks man. You really are the best." He whipped out his camera and took a swift pic of Choutarou. Then he looked around and asked someone to take their picture. "I just want to remember this moment." He said smiling as he nestled into Choutarou's arm putting his arm around the other's waist.
"Yeah...me too." Ohtori grinned and rested his chin on the top of Shishido's head. Shishido had always been a little touchy about his height, and Ohtori wondered if this would bother him at all.
The boat docked safely, and the two filed off the boat. Ohtori had seen the small version of the statue in Odaiba, but seeing the full size version was quite awe inspiring. All Ohtori could do was look up in awe, mouth agape.
"WOW." Shishido took in the majesty that was Lady Liberty. "That is wonderful." Shishido appreciated sculpture more than painting or anything. "She's beautiful."
He was admiring everything about it, lost in his own world. Smiling and engrossed for the first time in many years. He almost forgot about Choutarou as he wandered about. Taking pictures and admiring its grandeur.
It didn't take long for Ohtori to shift his attention to Shishido. The way his friend was totally enraptured by the statue, taking pictures, staring in awe. That in itself was something to behold. Ohtori was starting to wonder if this trip wasn't just as much a present for himself as it was for Shishido.
So, he just stood in his spot, watching Shishido. Seemed that was becoming one of his favourite pass-times lately. The silver haired youth wondered if there was something more to it than he could admit to himself. Like, why was it that he was starting to feel a little jealous of the way a group of girls were starting to point and stare at Shishido.
He wasn't sure what exactly came over him, but in a few quick strides, he was by Shishido's side, slinging and friendly arm over his friend's shoulder.
"Almost done falling head over heels for this lady?" Ohtori joked easily, his tone belying the tossing and turning of his stomach.
"Oh! Choutarou, I am sorry. It was -- I was---" He couldn't speak but he gave his friend a friendly smile and a quick squeeze. "This is awesome! I love this so much. It is so much fun. This is the best birthday ever!"
He knew hit was special, but it was more special now that it was with his friend. It was weird but he thought that it was the best feeling in the world. He wanted to fly like Gakuto.
Ohtori grinned from ear to ear at Shishido's enthusiasm. "The day's hardly started! Now say your goodbyes to the grand 'ole lady, or we're going to miss our ferry out of here!"
Grabbing Shishido's hand, Ohtori started to pull his friend towards the ferry dock. "There's so much more for us to see out there!"
Next stop, Chinatown for lunch!
"Oh right!" He said as he grabbed his friend and dashed out of the viewing plane just in time to catch the ferry out again. "Made it! And I save the day!" He said winking at his friend. "Choutarou, its really weird to have a celebration for my birthday, but I am glad I am and I am glad I am with you." He was so happy that he planted a smack on Choutarou's lips.
Ohtori was about so say something about how Shishido's birthday was an occasion that merited a lot of celebrating when Shishido's kiss silenced him. His entire mind went completely blank, but his cheeks still remembered how to react, turning him a violent shade of scarlet.
"Sh-Shishido-san!" Ohtori looked around, but no one on the boat seemed to have noticed.
He gently traced his lips with his finger. Did Shishido know that he had just stolen Ohtori's first kiss?
"Uh...um...I....uh....I'm glad you're glad that...um...yeah..." He raked a hand through his silver hair, wondering why it was that he couldn't seem to talk.
Shishido now cocked his head at Ohtori who was red in the face. "What's wrong, Choutarou? are you getting sick?"
He now remembered what he just did. "Don't tell me ... was ... was that your first kiss?"
"Uhh....uh..."
Ohtori stammered at Shishido's question, feeling his face getting even redder if that was possible. He crossed his arms over his chest in a slightly defensive posture
"Well...so what if it was?" Ohtori wondered if that was an embarrassing admission to make. Nineteen years old, and never been kissed before. And while part of him seemed to be happy that it was Shishido who stole it, Ohtori had hoped that his first kiss would be with someone who had those sorts of feelings behind it. After all, he was just Shishido's best friend, and nothing more, right?
"Well then, you and I are even," Ryo winked and then pulled Choutarou next to him. There was nothing more he can ask for his birthday, except for...his tummy growled confirming his thoughts. Yeah, he needed food. "How far is chinatown again?"
Did that mean what Ohtori thought it meant? That was Shisihdo's first kiss too? But then why would he waste it on Ohtori when he could save it for someone he really cared about? Thoughts were flying through Ohtori's head until the growl of Shishido's stomach chased them away. Right. Birthday tour. Now wasn't the time to be thinking about such things.
"It'll be about 10 minutes by taxi after we get off the dock. No fainting on me, okay?" Ohtori smiled as he teased.
"I won't faint," he promised. He gifted himself, he thought, with his first kiss with Choutarou. He wanted to taste those lips again, they were so soft. But he brushed those thoughts aside knowing that Choutarou will never go for him. They were friends. "I just need some food soon." He smiled.
They were off the dock soon and was soon racing to get a taxi in New York City. It took them 10 mins to get to Chinatown and soon hunt for food began.
They sat themselves down in a small noodle joint that Ohtori's classmates had suggested. It was tradition after all to eat noodles on one's birthday. Before handing Shishido the menu, Ohtori had a request to make.
"Shishido-san, make sure you order what you want, and not what's cheap just because I'm treating, okay?"
Shishido looked happy, and that made Ohtori feel warm inside. Somehow knowing that he could contribute to it was more than enough for him. He absently adjusted the small package in his back pocket to avoid sitting on it, and suddenly felt a little nervous. What if Shishido didn't like the gift? Would it be better not to give it to his friend?
Shishido knew exactly what he wanted. "BEEF CURRY NOODLES with SHRIMP!" he announced, seeing that its one of his favorite noodle dishes and it was on the menu. He also pointed at appetizers and wanted some yakitori. its been a while since he had them.
"Is your butt itchy?" Ryo winked at Tori noticing that he was adjusting his pants before he sat down.
Ohtori laughed. Well, it was a good thing that Shishido knew what he wanted.
"Alright, alright! I think half the restaurant know what you want now."
They placed their order with the hurried waitress before Ohtori registered Shishido's comment.
"Huh? What? Oh!" He blushed a little. "Um...no...um...it's nothing." Ohtori gave Shishido a lopsided smile.
Ryo narrowed his eyes. "Are. you. sure?" He said coming closer to Ohtori and tickling the boy's side.
He was in an amazing mood and he didn't think that anyone can make him feel this way. "Choutarou.... I think youre hiding something from meee~" He said in a sing song voice and continued tickling the boy. "I won't stop til you tell me!"
"AAAAAHHHH!!!! Stop it, Shishido-san!!!" Ohtori's choked laughter filled the room. "Please!! Stop tickling me!!!"
As Ohtori struggled to get free, the package in his pocket came loose and fell to the floor with a soft 'thump'. Ohtori looked in horror as Shishido's present made itself seen.
"Umm...."
"OOH! what is it? For me?" Shishido bent down to pick it up. It was a small blue box and he looked at it in wonder. whatever could it be he grinned as he gave it back to Tori. "Choutarou, I really don't need any presents. Having you here is good enough."
The waitress approached with their food.
"And food coming is excellent as well," He said as he took his chopsticks to the noodles. "ITADAKIMASU!"
For a moment, Ohtori was at a loss for what to do. Now that Shishido had seen the present, how could he not give it to him. But then Shishido was saying that he didn't need a present, so Ohtori was tempted to take him for his word.
He carefully took the package back from Shishido as the waitress set their food down.
"Um...well, since I got it for you already, I may as well give it to you.." Ohtori picked up his chopsticks and said a quiet 'itadakimasu' before continuing. "But I was planning on giving it to you when we were done touring...."
Mouth full of noodles, shishido ryo, slurped the last and swallowed. "If it is from you I'll take it," he said pausing to unwrap the present. His eyes went wide as saucers as he saw the necklace nestled on blue velvet. Its was diamond in shape, with a clasp. He picked it up and turned it over. It had an engraving on it.
"Ikyuu nyu Kon!" He read and then smiled. "I love it. Choutarou, put it on me." Shishido said looking at his friend with much gratitude. He would wear this always, near his heart and take care of it. This was a piece of Choutarou that he loved. " It's so beautiful, thank you!"
Ohtori laughed nervously and rubbed the back of his neck.
"I'm glad you like it, Shishido-san..." He stood up so he could put the necklace on his friend. "I wasn't sure if you'd like it...but I wanted to give you something that would be like a little bit of me that would be supporting you, no matter where we ended up in the world..."
Ohtori could feel his cheeks heating up as he sat back in his seat. He started eating his noodles, hoping that would provide a nice excuse for the colour on his face.
"Youre blushing, its cute." Shishido smiled. His eyes almost teared up at the meaning behind the necklace. Not that it was not special in his eyes already, but the meaning is even more special. I am carrying a little piece of Choutarou around "I love it Choutarou, I would cherish it forever. Thank you so much. This is the best birthday I've ever had."
Continuing to eat his noodles, Ohtori's eyes twinkled happily, even if his cheeks got a shade pinker.
"Finish eating your lunch, Shishido-san...there's still a lot more of the city to see."
On the inside, Ohtori's heart was flying. Shishido liked it, and said he'd treasure it. Ohtori wasn't sure why, but that made him feel like he was on top of the world.
While eating his noodles, shishido couldnt help but pause to stare at the necklace a few seconds and then continue. He was giddy, and pure happiness registered on his face. "These noodles are delish!" He declared as he finished the bowl off with a flourish. "Hurry up Slowpoke!!" He grinned as he sipped his water watching Ohtori eat.
There was a flutter in his heart. He loved watching Choutarou. It was so refreshing
"Okay, okay!!" Ohtori polished off the last of his noodles. "You always were the more impatient one between us." Ohtori laughed as he paid the bill. This was probably the first time Shishido had let him pay for so many things. It was nice, and Ohtori hoped that his friend would let him treat more often. When they were in high school, Shishido always pulled the 'senpai' card, and would treat Ohtori.
As they wandered through Chinatown, Ohtori checked the map again. "Hmm...do you think the city would look more interesting in natural daylight, or after it's all lit up?" That would determine what they saw next.
"After its all lit up. And I think I want to do some shopping," Shishido said smiling at Choutarou as he wandered chinatown. He at least had to give something back to Choutarou to remember this day what it is, he doesn't know yet, but it will come to him.
They walked along the streets of chinatown, shopping finding weird things and laughing. It was one of those things that shishido thought only happened in movies. So it is real, you know, this thing called love and crushes
He blushed as he let his hand brush Choutarou's as they walked. A sign suddenly made him stop. There it was, the luck shop. He yanked Choutarou's arm. "We're going in there."
"Woah!" Ohtori felt himself getting pulled into the store, and it took him by surprise. All around him were little Asian style trickets and amulets carved of jade, and other such stones. In the back of the store sat a wisend old woman, with a simple sign that said "Fortunes Told".
It wasn't that he believed in it or anything, but...
"Shishido-san, you should get your fortune told! It's your birthday after all!" He took his friend's hand and started to pull him towards the back of the room.
"I was thinking that," he smirked. Birthdays are good days to have fortunes told they say. He smiled at the old woman behind the counter. "How much for 2 readings?"
The old woman looked at Shishido, then to Ohtori, then back to Shishido. She stayed quiet the entire time, pinning them with her inscrutable stare. Ohtori had to admit he was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable.
"Hmm...same story....Ten dollah..." She pointed to the sign hanging next to her.
"Is okay?"
Ohtori wasn't sure she had understood them, but if she wanted to give them a two for one deal he wasn't going to argue. "That's good." He handed a ten dollar bill to her with a smile.
Shishido shrugged and sat down on the chair across from the fortune teller unsure of what to do. "Ummm...It's my birthday."
The old woman looked at Shishido for a long, long time, still not saying a word. Her eyes seemed fixed on the pendant nestled in the hollow of Shishido's neck.
"Today is fun. But will forget in time. Trinkets are painful when cannot hold temper. If you not careful, most precious thing pass you by...long long time...waste of time..."
She sighed, but kept her gaze fixed on Shishido, looking to see if he understood at all.
He had to process what the old woman was saying. She said today will be fun and then that I will forget it in time. >.> I dont understand about the trinket but ... yeah... so I will waste time on what?
"I have to be careful,huh?" Shishido asked questioningly at the old woman. "Will I be able to get out of the place I am now?"
The old woman tilted her head, quickly and sharply, almost like a bird.
"Careful....carefully...."
And with that, she turned her eyes to Ohtori, fixing him with her stare. For a while, he looked back, but soon found her gaze unnerving and looked away. Somehow, this didn't seem like such a good idea anymore...
"You be big star.maybe sadness but it not worth it. Too quick to make judgement, not good. Be watchful, do not be too hasty. Listen and watch for friends who need you, you will be decieved. If you lose sight of one precious thing, it will come again."
She smiled at both of them. "But luck and love come in different ways. Maybe you not see now, but in future."
she then gave them a brown rock each. "For grounding, It is fire year. you need more earth."
Ohtori blinked as the cool stone was pressed into his hand. His brain tried to process what the woman was saying, but her broken English combined with his own poor English wasn't helping.
"Um...Thank you..." Ohtori bowed his head politely, showing respect to an elder like he was taught. He wondered if that woman was really all there, but at the same time the sharpness of her eyes told her that she wasn't crazy. And that made things seem...a little creepy.
Shishido cocked his head at the woman who smiled and told them to look around. He did and found certain creepy stuff but found the most perfect gift for Ohtori there. It was just there ON SALE. A pretty little chime, with a free lucky charm in the shape of a crane.
"How much for that?" Shishido asked. The woman held up 10 and he gave her 10 dollars. He promptly gave the chimes and the charm to Ohtori. "Here, for good luck." He smiled.
Ohtori took the gift carefully in his hands, a big smile on his face. "Shishido-san! It's -your- birthday today! You're not supposed to be buying me presents!"
But, he had to admit that he liked it as he cradled it in his hands. Somehow, he knew he'd keep it forever as a memory of today, a little something from his best friend to treasure.
"But thank you..."
"I want you to remember this day," Ryo said. "It's one of the happiest day of my life. And i am glad i got to share it with you."
He was truly happy. He looked at Choutarou with shining eyes. "Thanks for today."
"You're welcome, Shishido-san. I'm happy to have shared it with you too." Ohtori smiled genuinly at Shishido, that kind of smile he saved only for his friend. "But don't thank me yet. The day's still not over! If you've seen enough of Chinatown, I think Time's Square is our next stop."
"Good, theres no way I want this day to end," he smiled as he nodded.
Somehow when he is with Choutarou, things just make themselves right. He looked over to the boy, thinking of the kiss he stole earlier.
"You didn't mind right?" Shishido asked carefully, "That I stole your first kiss?"
Ohtori's first reaction was embarassment, and his cheeks flushed instantly. But then he mulled it over a little. Truth was, he didn't really mind in the end. After all, it was Shishido. There really wasn't anything to be embarassed about.
"Not really. Can't say I was expecting that, but..." Ohtori tried to shrug non-chalantly. "It's okay." He gave Shishido a small smile, being careful not to run into people on the crowded New York streets.
"Good, you gave me another special gift then," Ryo smiled and whispered in his friend's ear. "It was mine too." He said placing a well planned smack in the middle of Choutarou's cheek.
"Thanks for being my first."
The way Shishido's breath tickled his ear made his shiver, and Ohtori froze on the spot when Shishido kissed his cheek. What was Shishido trying to say? He considered his first kiss a special gift? Why on earth would he do that?
"Sh-Shishido-san..." Ohtori's voice was quiet and soft as his hand reflexively touched his cheek where Shishido had kissed him. The musician was honestly at a loss for words. It wasn't possible that Shishido had feelings for him, was it? Ohtori swallowed as he tried to sort things out. He grabbed his cross out of habit and bit his lip.
"Um...you're welcome?"
Ohtori started to walk again, not wanting to block pedestrian traffic for too long. This day was starting to get really confusing for him, and that crazy fortune teller certainly hadn't helped.
"Heh. Don't think too much into it Choutarou," Shishido said non-chalantly. All traces of being romantic gone from his face leaving the normal shishido on. He was good at that, suddenly hiding his feelings. He didn't regret what he did, but Choutarou would never go for him would he? So it would be better if he acted like it was all a game.
But it wasn't. He really cared for Choutarou.
"Did I freak you out? You should have seen the look on your face!" He winked as he kept on walking leaving Choutarou behind a bit. When he was out of earshot, he grinned. It was all true
Oh. Well, that figured. Of course Shishido didn't like him that way. Ohtori figured his friend was probably just messing around with his head. Half of him found it comforting, and another half of him felt a little sad. Ohtori wondered what was wrong with him. He already had Shishido as a best friend. What more could he ask for? And wouldn't it be terribly selfsh to want something that Shishido wasn't even interested in?
As Shishido walked ahead of him, Ohtori couldn't help but look a the ground a little before mentally scolding himself. Today was Shishido's birthday, and he wasn't allowed to be sad about anything. With a deep breath, he nodded to himself before taking two quick stride to catch up to Shishido, his long legs easily covering the distance between them.
"Keep making fun of me like that, and I'm gonna call this day quits!" Ohtori mock threatened, knowing full well he'd never follow through on it. He punched Shishido's shoulder lightly.
"Oh yeah?" Shishido winked at the taller boy. "Youre calling it quits,huh? Eh, I guess youre not gonna hear the secret I have for you. You'll only hear it if you stay with me."
He really wasnt sure what the secret was. There was ONE but he wasnt sure if this was the time and place to say it. If he did would anything change? It probably would. and he was not sure he wanted it to happen that way.
"Where to next?"
"Ah, quit it, Shishido-san. Secret or not, you know as well as I do that I'm not going anywhere." Ohtori have Shishido a light, playful shove. "But if you have a secret you want to tell me, I'm here to listen anytime." He smiled and arched his eyebrow playfully, winking at his friend. Ohtori wondered what secret it was that Shishido was talking about. They'd spent a lot of time talking since meeting up again, and there wasn't a lot they hadn't discussed.
"Hmm...I think Times Square is next. Get ready for some crazy crowds."
"Ah then I have to hang on," Shishido grinned clinging to Choutarou playfully as they crossed the street. He didn't let go. He didn't want to. He just held on to Choutarou, knowing he was a safe anchor in a sea of unfamiliar people. Nothing can change the fact that to him, Choutarou will always be there. His silver haired friend is his secret.
Times square soon came up not too soon. The crowd was immense, it was like Tokyo, only worse. It seemed a little more crowded today than ever. Tourists lined the streets, businessmen rushed and actors rushed to get to their theaters. It was a busy day in new york, and the 2 young men were over whelmed.
Shishido felt a tug on his shoe and noticed that his shoe was untied. "Wait up Choutarou, I have to tie my shoe." he said to his friend and went to a corner to tie his shoe. He didn't realize that Choutarou did not hear him over the noise of the crowd. He looked up, and he was expecting his friend to be there with him waiting. But he looked up, and he was gone.
"Choutarou?!" This was not funny. He didn't want to lose Choutarou, much less get lost himself.
Somewhere at the periphery of his hearing, Ohtori thought he heard his name being called. He looked next to him and noticed that Shishido had disappeared. He tried to stop and get a good look at the crowd, but only managed to be pushed along by the crowd of people.
"Shishido-san!! Shishido-san!!!" Ohtori called out for his friend, eyes wide and panicky. This wasn't happening. How could he lose someone who was just walking next to him?! He shoved his hands in his pocket, and was hit with sudden inspiration. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed Shishido's familiar number. Things would be worked out in now time.
:BEEP: We apologize, but we are currently experiencing technical difficulties with our network. Please try again later
Oh. Great.
"OHTORI!" Shishido Ryo tried his best to look over the crowd. He stepped up to one of the lamppost and cursed inwardly for being so short. Goddamit! He looked out to the sea of people thinking that he could just pick out the silver haired boy. Looking out, he saw many silver heads. He realized that THAT idea was impossible.
He reached in his pocket for his cellphone. DOH! Just call him! When he pulled it out, he wanted to hit his head on the lamppost next to him. He forgot to charge it. His cellphone was dead and he did not memorize Choutarou's number. NOW WHAT?
It was at this moment that he needed a swig of whiskey, but he sighed. He promised Choutarou he would be clean and he would stay that way. He thought to where the most logical place Choutarou would be, maybe if he just stayed where he was, he would be found.
He was feeling like a lost child every second that passed. New York Times Square was a big scary place now - especially now that he was alone.
Ohtori did his best to stay in on place, dodging all the oncoming pedestrians. He stood up on his tiptoes, trying to catch any sign of his friend, but it was no use. He felt like his heart was going a mile a minute. The whole day had been going so well, and now this. Why hadn't the fortune teller mentioned this to them? Then again, maybe she had and they just didn't understand.
Frozen in place out of panic, Ohtori felt at a total loss for what to do. Times Square somehow seemed much scarier than Shibuya all of a sudden, filled with strange faces. "Shishido-san..." His friend's name slipped from his lips quietly as he bit his lower lip.
He had to do something. He couldn't just stand there being lost forever. Ohtori looked around and thought hard. If I were Shishido-san, where would I go at a time like this. And then it hit him. He knew where he should go.
This is not working. Choutarou, where would you go? He tried to think of the many places that Choutarou could choose to go. MTV, maybe... he started to head there, getting shoved around plenty by the taller people around him. He crossed the street to go to where the TV station was. It was a few blocks from where he was at and he felt like it would be miles.
Lucky or Unlucky for him, he had chanced upon the first single release of the Latest Male Pop Group LIVE on MTV station. Looking at the sea of young women, he twitched-- not really wanting to go anywhere near the squeeing or the fangirling but he had to. Maybe Ohtori was there. He DID love music. However on his way there, he felt a strong hand on his shoulder and a tall blonde american boy was smiling down at him.
'Hey babe, what's your name?'
Now Shishido Ryo looked menacingly at the boy. He wanted to hit him but he didn't know if he wanted to elbow his crotch or step on his foot or just pop him one on the face. "I. am. not. a. girl."
"A lesbian? Even better!"
"I AM A MAN." He said, turning around and kicking the boy in the balls. "GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME!"
GOD! This was turning into a nightmare.
Seeing the tennis match playing on the screens of the ESPN Center, Ohtori decided to head over there. After all, they both liked tennis right? It made sense to him. But getting there seemed to be be a much more difficult task than Ohtori originally thought. He felt himself getting pushed around a bit, and even though Ohtori was a big guy, he couldn't fight the sway of the crowd.
"Excuse me. I'm sorry. Excuse me, I'm sorry." Ohtori tried his best to work his way over. He felt himself getting pushed into a crowd of young women, who giggled and bet their eyes at him. "I'm so sorry!" Ohtori flushed and bowed with apology, earning himself some more giggles, and a kiss on his cheek, making him flush even more. American girls certainly were forward.
Finally, he made it to the doorway of the ESPN Center, craning his neck to look around. His shoulders slumped in disappointment. Shishido wasn't there.
Running away from the perverts, who now turned into goons who wanted to kick his ass, he ran towards the most logical place that Ohtori could be in. The ESPN Center was showing Tennis on TV. How could he have been so stupid and not head there first? Knowing Ohtori, he would be there already. With any luck, Ohtori was not crying or depressed yet.
"Hang in there, buddy. I am coming!" He said to the Ohotori in his head, that he imagined would be waiting, disappointed upon not seeing Shishido waiting for him. He looked back. He just lost the goons. GOOD. What a birthday.
Upon reaching the ESPN Center, he saw Ohtori in the middle of the room. Calling out to him was futile since the TVs were so loud. Time to turn on the Dash Specialist inside of him. He ran towards Ohtori, catching his sleeve and turning the boy around.
"FOUND YOU!"
Standing by the ESPN Centre, Ohtori was starting to feel a bit like a lost puppy. Every time he thought he heard something, he'd turn his head and search in that direction, only be find nothing. He worried at his lip; he was so sure that Shishido would come here...
And then he heard it. A bunch of girls giggling, and the giggling was getting closer and closer. Yes, the girls who had kissed him earlier had found him once again. They clustered around Ohtori, making the violinist feel even more flustered than he already was.
"Umm...." was pretty much all Ohtori could manage.
"You look like you're lost!"
"Why don't you hang out with us."
"We'll show you around, and make sure you have a good time."
"Uh..." Ohtori was totally at a loss for words. While English usually didn't give him this much trouble, he couldn't seem to focus enough to get the words out. Help! Shishido-san, where are you?
And at that exact moment, he felt a pull on his sleeve, and Shishido's familiar voice.
"Shishido-san!!" Ohtori felt like he was going to explode, overjoyed to see his friend. Without thinking, he gave Shishido a fierce hug.
"Thanks goodness! I was afraid I'd never find you!" Ohtori hadn't noticed that he had slipped back into his native Japanese as he spoke with is friend.
UMPH! Shishido was glomped. He smiled at Choutarou who was seriously relieved to see him. He was too happy to let go. He wrapped his arms around Choutarou. "Ne~ Don't ever do that to me again. I thought I will never see you again and I was scared to death. Choutarou..." He looked up at his friend.
"You're the last person who I want to lose," he smiled as he rested his forehead on his friend's shoulder. He was almost teary eyed and he hid his tears by looking down and sighing. "Choutarou. Promise me that we'll never be apart again."
Shishido now turned his attention to the girls who are now oggling at them with wide eyes and squeeing. "What are you girls looking at? There's nothing to see here." He said in English, dragging Choutarou off.
Ohtori felt like a million different emotions were running through him. He was happy, embarassed, relieved, worried, all at the same time.
You're the last person I want to lose
At those words, Ohtori squeezed his friend a little bit tighter. "You'll never lose me, Shishido-san. I'll always be somewhere where you can find me." He pulled away from his friend, goofy smile on his face. "But, I can't really promise you that, especially considering we don't even go to the same school. But you'll always know where to find me."
As Shishido dragged him off, Ohtori wondered just what the girls really were looking at.
"Seen enough of Time's Square, Shishido-san?"
Shishido just nodded. He was really getting pissed by all these people who are trying to ruin his day. Not that they couldnt be there of course, it just seemed that there was a force that was trying to pull him and Tori apart and he didn't like it. "All that running around made me hungry, Let's find something to eat for dinner. Somewhere QUIET please."
He was tired of the crowds, tired of the noise. He just wanted to be with Choutarou and no one else.
"Actually, if you don't mind, I had some ideas for dinner." Ohtori checked his watch. They could eat dinner comfortably and still make it for the surprise he had left for the evening. They left the ESPN Center, and Ohtori looked up at the sky. It looked like it was going to be a nice clear night. Perfect.
Ohtori grabbed Shishido's hand tightly, not wanting a repeat of what had just happened. They managed to weave through the crowd, and it wasn't until they were clear of the masses did he let go.
Checking his map one last time, Ohtori smiled and pointed in the direction of where he wanted to go. He had found a quiet little cafe not far from the Empire State Building that served very nice sandwiches. Somehow, they had a way of making grilled cheese upscale.
Shishido Ryo felt like a little boy being led out of a crowded marketplace by his mom, but he didn't mind. Choutarou's hand was in his and that's what matters. He would follow Choutarou anywhere it seems.
Reaching a cafe he smiled. "Ooh, looks classy," He commented. "Looks like you planned this waaaaaay before I had the idea, Choutarou." He winked. "I should be a good date and be flattered."
Flushing at the compliment, Ohtori stammered a bit when he processed the end of Shishido's comment. If he thought about it, he had to admit that things were a little like a date. Was Shishido trying to tell him something? Maybe he should have invited some of Shishido's friends to come too?
"Um...well, I know how much you like cheese sandwiches...but somehow taking you to a greasy spoon for your birthday dinner just didn't seem right." Ohtori smiled sheepishly. "But I'm glad you like it so far."
Ohtori checked his watch again. The last elevator was at 11:15pm. He just needed to make sure they were done in time.
"Grilled Cheese?!" Shishido's eyes lit up at the sound of one of his favorite things to eat. Choutarou does know how to make him happy. He gave his friend a squeeze. "Thanks man! you know how I needed my cheese!"
Even though there were horrors in their day, he had to admit that it was so much fun just hangning with Choutarou. Though his brain registered it as a date, he would never admit it. "Well my dear date, shall we?"
Playfully rolling his eyes, Ohtori chuckled at his friend. "Yes, I know just how much you enjoy your grilled cheese sandwiches. Can't say I agree with your taste in food though." Ohtori made a small face before looking at the menu.
He was still looking at his menu when Shishido made that crack about being his date. Ohtori's eyes widened a little bit, and he was happy that the menu was hiding his face from Shishido. The more Ohtori turned it over in his head, the more it seemed like today's outing was like a date of sorts. He couldn't quite figure out if Shishido was making fun of him for it though. Not wanting to rock the boat, Ohtori just decided not to comment on it.
"Well, I think I know what I want..." Ohtori looked up and smiled at their waitress, who made her way to their table to take their order.
"I'd like the Grilled Cheese Panini with extra cheese and extra bacon please, fries on the side and a cup of Cheese and Brocolli," Shishido ordered. That was enough. He eyed the dessert menu there was cheesecake. OOH! maybe they could split a small cake. He needs one. It was his birthday after all.
He thought about the day and ended up smiling. "Today was crazy,ne~ Choutarou. I thought I got to sleep for my birthday and you took me out, I got lost in New York, got hit on by some weird American dude who thought I was a woman, had the best noodles of my life, had weird fortunes told, and now I am having cheese! It's the best and worst day of my life combined and I spent it all with YOU!"
"And I'll have the roasted chicken foccacia, and a side salad. Oh! And could we get a bottle of Perrier and lime to share? Thanks." Ohtori put in his order before the waitress nodded and left the table.
Shishido's comment made Ohtori smile brightly. "Well, at least you can't say you had a boring birthday, right? And I'm really glad I got to spend it with you too."
The waitress returned with two glasses and a large bottle of sparkling water. Ohtori picked his up and clinked his glass against Shishido's. "Happy Birthday, Shishido-san. It's not champagne, but it's still fizzy." Ohtori gave his friend a small smile. They had a deal, if Shishido wasn't going to drink, neither would Ohtori (not like he was legal anyway, but they both knew it wouldn't be hard for the tall young man to get away with it).
Dinner was a relatively quiet affair as they talked about some of the different things they had seen during the day. Ohtori recounted how those rather forward American girls had found him, and how he hoped not to run into them again because they were just too much for him to deal with. Dessert came with a candle stuck in Shishido's cheesecake, and Ohtori jokingly commented that it would be in everyone's best interest if he didn't sing Happy Birthday. When they were just about done with their coffee and cake, Ohtori looked at his watch. 10:15pm.
"I hate to rush you, Shishido-san. But we should get going. There's still one last stop on your birthday tour."
Shishido sighed and stared at the sparkling water. "Tonic, huh?" He took a sip. Not the same as actual champagne, but it will do. He started on his dinner amazed on how much better these are than the ones he makes at home. "OISHIIII!" he grinned at Choutarou as they start to enjoy the quiet dinner. His eyes narrowed at the mention of the ladies and then told Choutarou that he would make sure they would never stalk him again.
Once dessert came, he almost teared up. "Choutarou, did you know that this is my first actual birthday cake since....middle school?" The last one he had was the one that Atobe and Hyoutei had for him. He never celebrated his birthday with cake after that, he didn't feel the need to or he had no one to share it with. Now, he had Choutarou - who, quite frankly, is the ONE person in the world who he would rather have shared it with.
"Thanks, and yes, I would rather you not sing," he winked. As he closed his eyes and made a wish. I wish that Choutarou and I would never be apart ever again. Coz it would be so lame if we did He opened them and blew out the candle and took it out putting it aside in a napkin so he can save it. The cake was delicious, and it was even sweeter with Choutarou being there.
When Choutarou said that they had one more stop, he cocked his head. "There's more?"
"Just one more thing, I promise." Ohtori grinned. "After that I'll stop dragging you around New York." He paid the bill before getting up from his seat, waving at Shishido to join him.
"C'mon, Dash Specialist. If we don't hurry, we won't have time to enjoy your last surprise."
Ohtori was glad their destination wasn't far from the restaurant. He hadn't firmly planned what they were going to do today so Shishido could see the things he wanted, but this was the one thing that Ohtori put extra thought into. Arriving at the Empire State Building, he grinned as he paid their admission and elevator fare. Sure, it wasn't the tallest building in New York anymore, but the view at night was still killer.
Shishido grinned at that name, Dash Specialist huh? How long has it been since he was called that. "Tch." He said as they approached Empire state. "Ooh up there? How romantic."
He watched as the glass elevators climbed up, watching everything become smaller and moving closer to Choutarou. he smiled. "It's so pretty up here."
Ohtori swallowed and choked quietly. Romantic? He hadn't considered that it might have been interpreted that way. "I-uh," he stumbled on his words for a moment. "I just thought it might be nice to see the city from a different viewpoint...y'know, instead of always being shoved around in the crowd." He looked out the window of the elevator, watching the craze of the city disappear below them. "But it is a really nice view." He casually rested a hand on Shishido's shoulder, giving it a light squeeze.
As they stepped out of the elevator, the first place they headed was the observation deck. Looking out over the bustling city, watching the tiny little lights of cars rushing here and there, Ohtori couldn't help the wide, bright smile that came to his lips. "It's like we're on top of the world, ne Shishido-san?"
"I am," he said mostly referring to his feelings right now. How could everything be so perfect and yet so... He looked at Ohtori whose hair was blowing in the wind. If he had a choice, he would hold him close right now. But he held back and instead took his friend's hand and raised it up. "NEW YORK! Meet your VIOLIN PRODIGY! Watch for him in Madison Square Garden!!" Shishido said the best he could in English.
Some of the other people on the deck looked at him and he smiled. "He's also the best friend a guy can ever have."
At first, Ohtori was shocked at Shishido's outburst, and then he started laughing. Shishido always knew how to make a scene. But what his friend said really touched him. It didn't matter what it was about, Shishido always believed in him 100%, and knowing that was a great feeling.
"Same goes for you, Shishido-san. I couldn't have asked for a better friend."
Ohtori reached around Shishido's shoulder and pulled his friend closer in a one-armed hug as they gazed at the city skyline.
"Happy Birthday again, Shishido-san. Here's to many, many more fun and exciting years ahead."
"Here's to them with you," Shishido added as he leaned his head on his friend's shoulder.
He then leaned down to the railing, letting his hair fly in the night wind. he took the hair tye off so he could retie it but somehow, it just managed to escape him. Laughing a little, he let it go. He could fix it later.
He turned to Choutarou, his hair flying in the wind. "It's the best birthday ever, Choutarou. Thank you again."
