school shopping

I remember when I was a child, and $100 got you a shit ton of clothes. I also remember that as soon as I was tall enough to fit into my mom's jeans, she'd give me hers so that she could buy me more shirts to get through the school year. They didn't have much money, so needless to say I was not the most fashionable kid at school.

My grandma used to help them out by getting me clothes and supplies throughout the year. Remember when you got to middle school and it was required that you get the $100 calculator? My grandma got that for me, as $100 was about my entire allotted school supplies/clothes budget. She also got me my very first pair of brand name tennis shoes, although they were a christmas present.

I hated my mom's taste in clothing. She wanted me to wear all frilly feminine girly stuff all the time. I was a tomboy. My mom was a fan of shoulder pads. I hated them. By the time I was old enough to go to wander the mall with my friends, my mom would just give me the money and let me do my own school shopping. I also started working when I was in 8th grade, so I was able to get pretty much whatever clothing I wanted by that point.

Today we took Belle clothes shopping. I can't believe how expensive children's clothing is....seriously, $35 for a child's shirt!! Perhaps it's not that the clothes are so expensive, but that they are marked up so much.....and then you're supposed to think you are getting a great deal when they are on "sale" for 60% off. Belle has has a growth spurt and outgrown just about everything she has, so I today I spent more on clothes for her than I ever have.

But then she hugged me, told be I had great taste in clothes, and told me she loved me.

sigh.
