when i was little i subsisted primarily on apples, greenpeas, and sliced cheese that i would cut shapes out of using a toothpick. but mostly apples. i'd always ask my mom - "may i have an apple?" and she'd say - "yes!" it was probably pretty nice for her, being that bags of apples back then were probably pretty economical, and it meant more meat and such for everyone else. (actually, to make a small economic digression, the original meijer on michigan and fuller was our preferred grocery, and used to have free parsley in the produce section, which i adopted as my "special treat", thereby further increasing my inverse food budget value.)
as for the inveterate apple habit, it developed into a system of eating that i maintain to this day. methodical and highly efficient, i can finish off even the largest apple in a surprisingly short span of time. when there are no apples to be had and i want one, it's the most pathetic feeling of loss and longing. nothing can take their place - not carrots, not citrus... grapes can sometimes take the edge off the impending panic. lastnite at one:oclock in the morning i was lamenting just such a devastating lack of apples, which gabriel offered to assuage by procuring some from a modern big meijer. to my great surprise, i proved to myself that i have in some small measure evolved as a person - i declined the generous offer and waited until brighter skies should arrive.
now, i'm going to eat an apple.
