Went out to Blackhawk yesterday for their monthly fighter practice. It was as much a social visit for me as an actual practice, since the group hasn't held an event since I took RegSen and doesn't have one on the calendar before I'm scheduled to step down. It was a good time, about a dozen people from all over.

Giles Horsebow came down from Jaravellir for the practice. (I only knew him as a merchant and archer - didn’t realize that he’s a fairly hot stick on the rapier side.) We were out playing singlesword and had a pretty good little pas de deux going; he was probably getting 2 or 3 hits on me for every one I had on him, but I wasn’t getting pummeled and we were having fun.

I pulled a perfect maneuver: bound his blade, cleared it right out of the zone, step-lunge-strike! And just about the time my left hand moved forward toward his ribs, I realized...

Oh yeah, we’re fighting singlesword, aren’t we?

So I lightly tapped him with my empty fist. He looked down and said, “hey, that was a pretty good move - if you had a dagger!” At which point all I could do was say, “um, yeah...” and stand there laughing helplessly as he disengaged and killed me.

It was so funny. We were still laughing over it at dinner (Fifth Alarm, in Byron - wonderful burgers, good beer list, and Giles says the mac’n’cheese is fantastic - it sure looked good!). And I’m still laughing over it now. Awesome silly fun. A great day.

sca, the good fight
