(wild) life in the city

So one night last week I got home late and in much need of the necessary room. When I pulled into the driveway, what should appear in my headlights but...a skunk. I figured, okay, he'll waddle off momentarily and all will be well.

And indeed he did--right under my car. I sat there with my eyeballs floating, not willing to make a move lest it startle the little feller, for what seemed like an eternity (but couldn't have been more than a couple of minutes) until he exited and I saw him cross the street. Whew!

And what did I learn from this? Not much, apparently.

I get home tonight just around dusk. Being the end of the work week, I have several odds and ends to bring in--more than I can take in one trip. So I grab what I can, open the door and take stuff in, go do one or two other things, and then head back to the car for the remaining gear. I'll have both hands full, so I leave the door open.

As I sidle past the daylilies to the passenger side of the car, I hear a rustle. No big deal, I figure, I've just brushed the lilies. Open car door, grab stuff, turn--and freeze.

There's a small dark shape between me and the open door to the house.
It wasn't there a minute ago.
It's moving.
And there isn't enough light left to determine color or shape.

(Contrary to common belief, you can't always smell a skunk. If its life has been relatively peaceful of late and it hasn't needed to spray, you might not smell it until it's much too late.)

The Lords of Chaos choose to smile on me. Whatever the critter is, it high-tails it for the back yard instead of a.) wandering into the house (which I've seen happen before) or b.) taking offensive action in the most literal sense.

I don't think I'm going back outside for anything tonight. 8D
