Summary: This is an AU of my two original characters who, normally in the Revel universe and in their twenties, are in this drabble real-world high school students. It's also AU because in this drabble Cassie is romantically attracted to Mona, whereas in Revel they're just good friends. As for plot, this is just a little snippet of Mona coming up with a plan while they're in class.
She can see Mona's brown-black eyes gleaming, the sparkle of her silver hijab as it drapes gracefully across her head, pinned to the right side with a lacy black vintage broach, and she wonders what schemes her best friend's sharp mind currently concocts. Mr. Mateer, their Roman Civilizations teacher with mutton chops and a booming voice, talks loud enough to cover Cassie's whisper.
"I know that look," Cassie says, leaning over so that her right shoulder touches Mona's left. "Whatever you're thinking about, I better be included."
"We can beat the Makers," Mona whispers back, her lips almost touching Cassie's ear. She smells like sandalwood and the slightest hint of baby powder, which she uses as an antiperspirant. Cassie realizes that the familiar scent relaxes her, but makes her feel uncomfortably hot. Well, that's pretty weird.
"What? How?"
"We beat the Makers," Mona repeats slowly, savoring her own brilliance, "By becoming Makers. We go behind enemy lines."
"But how do we get into the Core?" Cassie's eyes are wide with disbelief-- not at the plan, but at the complete brilliance and gall behind it.
"How else would we do it?" Mona says, as if its obvious. "We stroll right on in."
