I want to write a book on medieval and renaissance costuming entitled "Hey Lady, Turn Around". I think I may well have to start collecting images for it.
Why am I reminded of this now? I just found a sketch in QEWU that is a lady wearing a gown, dated to 1560, first the front, and then the back, clearly showing the lacing in the back. Two pages before that, another one from 1560, clearly showing a front fastening gown.
O for a working scanner! My eyes are just not good enough.
