The schedule for the
Last Call Film Festival is up and, straight from university and our flist,
Gollum42's movie Umbilical Jim will be on at 8:30 p.m. on Friday! Perfect timing in my book, right for the supper crowd, enough time to relax after rush hour(s) and before people start drinking which I heard was required for the horror movie showing later (I am by default, designated driver). I'm pretty excited. Three days of movie festing and day one starts off with a documentary on the band The Gits and that day's FREE. Friday and Saturday are only $5, a pure bargain. I have two friends in town coming in from Arizona and Maryland so that's where we're planting ourselves, ready to be entertained, giving good audience.
This weekend I'm doing my first volunteer duty for
Balloon Odyssey at around 5:30 a.m. (Cancelled, rescheduled Sunday due to rain.) Dressing for comfort and mud, I'll be out in the field helping lay out the hot air balloons to be inflated. After 10 volunteer days logged in, I get to go up for free which is about $175 for the big tour. I've never been up in one before besides the state fair type ones that only go up a couple of stories and come right back down immediately. This is a baby step. Part of my method to beat my fear of great heights is to just jump right into it. Which, speaking of jumping, if things work out, I'll do a tandem parachute jump later this summer or early fall. Then I can mark it off the list of things I want to do before I die which hopefully won't be later this summer or early fall.
Another thing coming up this fall . . .
Idea Fest Louisville! Last year I got to see Ray Bradbury (just the top of his head, and then heard the lecture but close enough), it was just so moving. Love makes the world go 'round, you see, and that's the most important lesson he's learned in life. He said it much more elegantly. I couldn't get in to see Steve Wozniak or some of the other key speakers so I might do some volunteering, see if I can usher my way into more of these things.
And it looks like Abby had a great experience at WisCon - I might have to check that out next year. The titles of some of the lectures caught my eye. A lot. I still would like to one day make it to San Diego's Comic Con but my next big save-a-lot trip is Europe. We'll see what happens after that.
Otherwise, I'm pretty happy there's a farmer's market that's open now a couple of blocks away on Saturdays where I can get my greens, peppers (fingers crossed) and tomatoes (hopefully soon!). Nothing against Whole Foods' farmer's market participants but it's overpriced, the Whole Foods way.
Have a great weekend, everybody! I'm resting up with Battlestar Galactica tonight.

Hmmm. Dead, dead, dead and Prince. Suicide, overdose and banning a live cover performance recording of Creep by Radiohead. At least I didn't get Dr. Phil like my sister.

The Artist
You, my friend, are an artiste! Fuelled by a hounding sense of creativity and an untameable desire to express yourself, you see the world through rose-colored glasses one day and then wrestle the curtains closed and turn off the lights so you can ponder life the next. Your dog-eared journal is filled with brilliant ideas about rescuing the universe, yet you have trouble training your noggin on any one of them for any significant amount of time. Your originality occasionally manifests itself as performance art, and you love showing off your amazing athletic abilities in front of an audience. When it comes to taking on the leader of the pack, you’re not afraid to sink your teeth in - and won't loosen your grip until you've gotten your point across.
